How Did Tulsa Choose A Hurricane?

Posted: Wed Oct 22, 2003 7:37 amI am from Tulsa, and the story that I had always heard was that they were origanally the Tulsa Tornado, but a real tornado hit close to Tulsa and killed some people. There were complaints from Tulsans that a tornado was not an appropriate mascot for a christian school. So it was changed to Hurricane, (an even more destructive act of nature.) Go figure.

Posted: Wed Oct 22, 2003 8:51 amTulsa did not select Golden Tornadoes as it was used by GA Tech at that time. We wore gold jerseys and "tore through opponents" like a tornado. Since that name was taken, they chose Hurricane as a similar weather phenomenon.
