UTEP PREVIEW: Miners present major concerns

The UTEP Miners are hard to figure out. How can a team that has lost to Buffalo and Memphis and Tulane also knock off C-USA heavyweights Tulsa and Houston?

The real question that should be asked probably is the reverse of that equation: how can a team with that much talent falter against some of the lesser teams on its schedule? But what's relevant here is really which team will show up Saturday in Dallas for UTEP's 2 p.m. showdown with the Mustangs at Gerald J. Ford Stadium?

There is a lot riding on this game, primarily bowl eligibility. If SMU wins, the Ponies will be eligible for a bowl for the first time in more than a decade ... and UTEP (3-6), will be unable to reach the six-wins plateau required for postseason eligibility. Because of that, the Mustangs expect UTEP head coach Mike Price to pull out all the stops against the Mustangs.

UTEP features one of the premier running backs in the nation, in junior Donald Buckram, and a strong-armed QB who has shown a penchant for throwing a costly interception ... and for making the big plays happen for his offense.

Great reading before I leave for the game.
We need to shut down their offense to be able to get a W.

That's true. I don't see us "stopping" Buckram at all, but if we can keep him from a huge game, I think we've got a chance.

I'm a little nervous about JJ saying in the DMN today that we don't match up well with the Miners.
