The Wild Mustang

Postby SMU21TCU10 » Tue Nov 17, 2009 3:26 am

The direct Snaps to Shawnbrey didnt work very good against UTEP. However I liked to see us running it, and hopefully it will produce in the future. Didnt think JJ would do that! But I guess since he has a RB who can pull it off he decided to install it.

Can we come up with something better than Wild____ to call this? That is a silly name. Can we call it "balanced line single wing" or something else somewhat descriptive?

Thats a little long, "Well McNeal lines up in the balanced line single wing, while I was pronouncing the fprmation he already ran 80 yds for a TD."

Thats something I was wondering.

The other thing is our line is not exactly built for mauling people, I wonder if we are really going to do any damage in this formation despite the fact that Shawnbrey is a really good running back...

Then call it the Peruna offense, since that's the closest thing to a wild mascot that we have on the field.

In high school we ran a lot of single wing. We called it the Box. Always wondered why colleges wouldn't just call it what it is - the single wing. ND four horsemen style.

Another thing to note, the traditional single wing does not require a huge mauling offensive line, just a really fast one. Lots of sweep plays (now are end read plays) where multiple offensive linemen are pulling.

Wild Mustang is perfect. Mustang is the SMU name for its athletic teams and historically the name came from Wild Mustang. Seems that giving other teams something new to defense, gives them less time to work on defensing the multiple plays and passing patterns of the Run and Shoot. Just guessing. More is better with the offense as long as the players are on board.

That'd be fun to see Shawnbrey taking a direct snap with BJ Lee lined up in the backfield. Now there's some speeeeeed
