Bruce Ely/The OregonianAthletic director Torre Chisholm announces Jerry Glanville's resignation this morning.Davis, the former Vikings head coach and an expert on the run and shoot, joined Glanville's staff with the understanding that he would have full autonomy to run the offense. But when Glanville demanded that changes be made to the offense, Davis decided to step aside.

Davis' departure didn't sit well with many of the players and longtime boosters, and the move ended up contributing to Glanville's demise when the offense struggled to produce on a consistent basis.

Reached at his home in Lake Oswego, Davis said Tuesday was a "good day for PSU football, because this will clean it up and give them a chance to get a new start on the program and getting it going.

"Obviously, you'd like to have some continuation, but you surely don't want any continuation of the offense they had this year. You'd like to have that cleaned up. And the defense hasn't been too sparkling, either."

Davis had high expectations for the Vikings when he left in June.

"I couldn't recognize the offense by the end of the year, it had changed so much," Davis said. "They've got some good kids, I think, some talented kids, so let's get started with something that everyone believes in. But normally when you bring someone new in, they have some thoughts on what and who they want, and obviously that's the way it's got to be."

Davis said he is not interested in replacing Glanville, but is eager to assist in other ways, including helping with the search to find a replacement or working with the next head coach.
