DMN: Update on the Bowl "Situation"

Chatted with athletic director Steve Orsini on Wednesday for a story that will run in Saturday's paper. He made it clear that SMU will go to whatever bowl Conference USA decides is best - including the Liberty Bowl in Memphis instead of the Hawaii Bowl, which coach June Jones has been locked-in on. Of course, the ESPN decision-makers have a big say in this too, and Orsini said he'd been told Jones' return to Hawaii would make for good T.V.

But then again, so would SMU going to a bowl anywhere after 25 years. Stay tuned.

Also, it's not up the conference. It's up to the Liberty Bowl. They have a contract for first pick.

This is exactly how it should be handled...As long as it is handled in this manner I am fine with either game...

However, the Liberty Bowl has taken the C-USA champion since 1996, thats 12 years in a row, including some small schools/fan bases including Tulsa.

If it were not for June's comments, this would not even be talked about, the Conference Winner goes to the Liberty Bowl, period, no discussions.

Therefore, if we win the conference championship and end up in Hawaii it is because of the influence of Jones, don't let anyone tell you otherwise or try and rationalize it.

Not saying that is a bad thing, just realize what caused it.

as I predicted the other day-everybody (except June) is saying the right things. Its window dressing. I'll bet you a foot of your tally-whacker SMU is going to Hawaii.

That won't leave much. :)

So you're predicting a loss in one of the next three?

I'd ask exactly what that means, but I'm afraid you'd tell me.

If I were a betting man I would be.

But I am hoping not.

I agree with the sentiments, as long as I feel that the decision that is best for the School and the Conference has been made, I'll be happy. I just don't want June imposing his will on everything the team does, although I'm inclined to give him some leeway considering where he has gotten this team. I just think Orsini needs to make sure the fans and conference are thought of when the decision is made.

I hope we make the conf championship, even if we dont win it. Its a nationally televised game and it would be nice to have the added exposure, in addition to a bowl game

No what I'm saying is Liberty Bowl doesn't really want SMU a team with 15,000 fans and SMU doesn't really want to Liberty Bowl. ESPN wants us in the Hawaii Bowl and that's where we will be EVEN if we are the Champions.
