Depends on the conference. Usually the conference and the bowls higher in the selection order have to release the bowl to make an announcement. Otherwise it would not be until Dec. 6. I would think though that once the conference championship game is officially set, CUSA could release the Hawaii Bowl to make an announcement if they didn't want one of the teams in that game--so maybe after this weekend.

David A.K. Matlin, the executive director of the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, confirmed that he will be in attendance for Saturday's SMU game against Tulane.

That site also shows Hawaii at 7-6...however, they are currently at 5-6 with two games left including Navy I believe.

Odd because that was last year's matchup and the Irish blew them out.

Somewhere I have read that the Hawaii Bowl is second to the Liberty Bowl who normally takes the Conference Champion. So does this mean that if Houston wins this Saturday and SMU cannot be the Conference Champion, the Hawaii Bowl can extend the invitation this weekend?

Is the Executive Director going to be at the game for the purpose of extending the invitation or will he be there to evaluate the Mustangs?

Short answer is yes. Although when they are allowed to officially announce is usually up to the conference. (Last year the Gator Bowl wanted to make an early announcement, and the ACC released them to announce Clemson, but the Big 12 wouldn't let them announce Nebraska until after the BCS selections had been made....although the director slipped in a press conference before then and confirmed what everyone already knew.)

As far as the director being there, no idea. Usually bowls send representatives to games of potential teams toward the end of the season for evaluation purposes. (Cotton, Holiday, and Alamo officials will be at Nebraska, Texas Tech, and OSU games this weekend.) The Executive Director could be something more official though????

We've had reps at games before. Let's just focus on not laying an egg on the field.

Agree about not laying an egg on the filed. The reason I asked the question is the Mustang Club says it will release it's packages as soon as it is official. I want to compare what I could get through the Mustang Club to what I can get on my own.

Bingo. The only thing this guy is going to "evaluate" is the Dallas nightlife. If we win, it is done and I assume and hope for the team he will be in the locker room.

As a side note, just think about what was being discussed before the last game of a season over the last couple of decades. This is nice.

Noticed in the Washington Post today that Navy has already accepted an invite to the Texas Bowl. So I guess we could get an invite tothe Hawaii Bowl this weekend depending on what happens at Houston-Rice.

Bill plug in the flights on you smart phone, have them ready to book. Then pull the trigger Saturday when you know we have won, which for this team is when the clock runs out.

Need to wait until after the Houston-Rice result becomes certain. If SMU and Rice both win, the question becomes will we go to Hawaii regardless of what happens in the Conf USA Championship game.
