Porter is a better hire...but, people get all glassy eyed when it comes to "ex NFL" players...

Maybe. But did you see the Ole Miss-LSU game? That last second decision to spike the ball was Porter's call. Right now LSU is ready to ship him to Memphis for free.

Jerry Gray is a great hire for Memphis.

The LSU people liked Porter and he was a good recruiter. However, his style is very extreme and there is no middle ground. Recruits either like him a lot or they want to get away as fast as possible.

Jerry Gray is a good friend of mine from the days in the 90s when I was working in athletic recruiting and Jerry was our DBs coach.

He will do a great job!

gray is a real average hire for mempho..with ALL due respect, he is a good friend / bud / pal of Mr. Fred Smith (ie: FedEx, for all you Meadows grads..)..Memphis thinks this brings $$$, ala, our bro Pickens...Porter was the MUCH better choice, for those with half a brain...

The Redskins players and coaches have nothing but praise for the guy and said that being a head coach is in his future. Memphis is a program that is a good spot for a coach to have as his first head coaching gig. Recruiting is relatively easy in that pretty much anyone can get in. You have Miss., Ark., Tennessee to recruit in and given his Texas ties, Gray will be able to snatch a few Texas players as well. Memphis could have done a whole lot worse.

I hope Coach Gray gets a head-coaching gig, but I also hope his son doesn't transfer. I've heard teammates say pretty good things about him.

Redskins' Gray nears long-held goal of becoming a head coach
Redskins assistant Jerry Gray wanted to be a head coach by 40. At 46, he's a finalist for the opening at Memphis

As the Washington Redskins prepared to take on the Philadelphia Eagles last month, talk swirled around Redskins Park that Jerry Gray, an affable assistant in charge of the secondary, would be named the interim coach if owner Daniel Snyder chose to fire Jim Zorn midway through the season.

It certainly wasn't how Gray wanted to assume the throne of any football team, but his career aspirations were not up for debate.

"If you get a chance to do that, you want to do that," Gray said at the time of a head coaching job. "You want to make sure you're not just an assistant your whole career."
