Where were you on December 29, 1984

Postby carolina stang » Sat Nov 28, 2009 9:05 pm

Today's win was fabulous. I salute June and the team. Sometimes I think back to our glory days and it seemed like a dream! Did it really ever happen?

So where were you on this date for our Aloha Bowl win over Notre Dame? My apologies in advance if this has already been rehashed!

I watched the game at my dad's law office on a Saturday night. It was two years after I graduated from SMU. The cable at my house was out and my parents lived in the country. No Direct TV at that time for the rural areas! Unless you wanted to buy one of those industrial size jobs! Some friends joined us to watch a great win. My memories were of a big game for Jeff Atkins and Reggie Dupard. It was certainly alot more fun to watch than the Sun Bowl the year before. (Remember Fred Nichols? El Paso is a pitiful town) Anyway, I recall Notre Dame driving at the end and we had a late interception to seal the deal. Wasn't Gerry Faust still the coach? His next to last year?

Go Ponies. Time to make new bowl memories!!

I knew there would be several replies to that effect. I am happy we have lots of young, old and in between fans for the Ponies and on this board. God, I sound old and I'm not quite 50!

If that is the case, then that makes your avatar even more hilarious. Exactly what year is that card from?

In 1984, I was in junior high school in North Carolina and knew nothing of SMU. So this bowl game will actually feel like the first SMU bowl game ever to me. Sure, I can look back at the record books, stats, and video to see that the teams back then were good, but getting a taste of this first hand is greatness. GO PONIES!

I was a senior in high school. Graduated in 1989 from SMU with a soccer game as our homecoming game.

I was 5 years old. I also knew nothing of SMU at that point, but I couldn't be happier tonight. After experiencing the 1997 loss to TCU, all the lost games in the final minutes, I still found it hard to really believe. This season has been a rollercoaster for us who have never really seen SMU win. While this team has made everyone feel like they could actually pull out the wins--a nice change, I might add--I still always had that nagging feeling that whatever can go wrong with SMU football will go wrong. It is a new day, and it is a tremendous feeling. I keep going to the standings page on ESPN and staring incredulously that our record is 7-5. And I truly believe that only better things are to come.

Congratulations to all the players. Thank you to June Jones, all of the assistants, the boosters, Orsini, and Turner who all made this possible. Everyone enjoy Hawaii. I wish I could be there too, but I will be watching back on the mainland--and this time it won't be on Channel Surfing, it will be in HD!

GO MUSTANGS!!!!!

I watched at home with my dad. We had been die-hard fans for several years. My mother went to SMU and so did my uncle. I'm not sure why my dad loved the team so much, but he did.

We always thought there were some real dimwits in the administration at SMU when the whole death-penalty thing came around. Many professors wanted the whole athletic department disbanded so all that money could go to research. I want them to all watch what's going to happen in the next few years if SMU's football program remains good or becomes great.

I watched SMU during the old Dickerson-James Pony Express days. I watched all the way up through the last season in 1986. I loved the team and got to know the school because of that. When it came time for me to graduate high school I applied to exactly one college - SMU.

I know I'm not the only one who had that kind of attraction to the school. Athletics when done right can be a huge benefit to the educational experience at a school. I think the current administration gets that. I just hope the professors who hate the athletic department will learn that. Now that this awful monkey is finally off our back, maybe they will.

I lived in Kenner, Louisiana, which is a suburb of New Orleans. The game was televised on ESPN. But we didn't have cable at our house, so I went to a local bar to watch the game. I figured that everyone else at the place would be pulling for Notre Dame since New Orleans is predominantly Catholic. But, our running back Reggie Dupard was from the New Orleans area, and everyone at the place seemed to be pulling for SMU.

My favorite game that I attended was two years earlier, when we played in the Cotton Bowl, beating Pitt 7-3.
