HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University Head Football Coach Mark Snyder announced his intention to resign Sunday.

"I met with Mike Hamrick (Director of Athletics) extensively today and we discussed our football program. I feel that it was in the best interest of our program for me to announce my intent to resign my position," Snyder said. "It has been an honor to be the coach here and I will always be appreciative of the opportunity my university gave me.

"I want to thank all of the fans for their support and all of my players and assistant coaches for their hard work and dedication. I wish the program nothing but the best."

Snyder, a 1988 Marshall graduate, has served as head coach for the past five seasons at his alma-mater and has a career record of 21-37.

"I want to thank Mark for his five years of service to Marshall University," Hamrick said. "He is a Marshall guy and we wish him the best in his future endeavors."

Hamrick confirmed that a search for a new head coach will begin immediately and to protect the integrity of the search he will not comment on any aspect of it during the process.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- WSAZ-TV has confirmed Mark Snyder has resigned as football coach at Marshall University.

There is a team meeting at the Shewey Building at 3 p.m.

Snyder compiled a 22-37 record over his five year tenure with Marshall.

The Thundering Herd is 6-6 in 2009, earning conditional bowl eligibility after a win against SMU. In their season finale, Marshall lost 52-21 at UTEP.

Marshall hired Snyder in April 2005 to succeed Bob Pruett, the same season the school made the move from the MAC to Conference USA. After a 4-7 season in 2005, the university resigned Snyder through 2013.

I assume this means they were told they were not going bowling.

Wrong, that is still out there...they have stated that DC (and former Cincy coach) Rick Minter will coach them in any bowl game they might attend.

We'll see, but you would think they would not remove the HC after getting to a bowl the first time in 5 years.

So, who do they get. If I were them I'd go after Bower. All he did was win at So. Miss and would probably move the Herd up the rankings in CUSA.

You'd think, but I think Marshall's fan base is so upset with the style of play (it's not what took their program to the top 25 in the late 90s) that there was too much pressure on the athletic director to delay acting.

True. Another choice would be JMU's Mickey Matthews, who has a NC under his belt, and used to coach at Marshall

I hear Pat Sullivan called to welcome him to the "my final win didn't save my job but really hurt SMU" club.

I understood many Marshall fans were rooting for SMU 2 weeks ago because they wanted Snyder fired. Apparently not a popular fellow.

Regarding Marshall's bowl chances, my understanding is that C-USA has 6 bids for 6 bowl eligible teams. So, Marshall will get a bowl bid this year. I just think Marshall decided they were going to move on, and there was no need to delay the inevitable, bowl or not.

I'm thinking...

Liberty Bowl- CUSA champ (probably Houston)
Hawaii Bowl- SMU!!!
Armed Forces Bowl- CUSA runner-up (probably East Carolina)
St. Petersburg Bowl- UCF
New Orleans Bowl- Southern Mississippi
EagleBank Bowl- Marshall
