Charlie Weis is out after five seasons as Notre Dame coach, the New York Daily News is reporting.
The newspaper cited a source close to the program for its report.
Notre Dame players have scheduled a mid-afternoon players meeting for Monday while awaiting official word on Weis. The meeting will include a vote on whether the players want to play in a bowl game after their 6-6 season. Athletic director Jack Swarbrick has said he will consider the players' wishes in deciding on a bowl trip.
Weis was not in his office early Monday, though there were no announcements about whether he will return for a sixth season. Swarbrick has said he will make that decision within the next few days.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame players have scheduled a players meeting for Monday while awaiting word on the fate of coach Charlie Weis.
The meeting, set for midafternoon, will include a vote on whether the players want to play in a bowl game after a 6-6 season. Athletic director Jack Swarbrick has said he will consider the players' wishes in deciding on a bowl trip.
Notre Dame (6-6) finished its regular season with its fourth straight loss, 45-38 at Stanford on Saturday night.
Weis was not in his office early Monday, though there were no announcements about whether he will return for a sixth season. Swarbrick has said he will make that decision within the next few days.
Weis, who has six years left on his contract, has a 35-27 record in five years as Notre Dame's coach. His .565 winning percentage is worse than the .583 marks that got his two predecessors, Tyrone Willingham and Bob Davie, fired.
Weis has told people in South Bend that he already has heard from roughly six NFL teams about becoming their offensive coordinator next season, sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

What will be the price ND pays for the nest coach? Considering howmuch we paid to get a winner, how much will ND pay?

He has 6 years left on his contract so paying that off plus a new salary is a big chunk of change

Another "offering" this Sunday, nationwide, should take care of it.

If they are foolish enough to fire Weis they will owe him roughly $18 million for the remaining 6 years on his contract, they jeopardize losing part of a top 10 recruiting class which fills in some of his defensive needs, it really jams up the AD on his next selection particularly if a successor takes a year or two to win and conditions/pressure might make it almost impossible for him to win, will possibly scare away top coaching candidates who will decide the pressure makes the job not worthwhile despite the $$$$, will scare recruits who will not want to be so scrutinized or subject to such pressure ( fan sucker punching their QB will be noted by recruits) and relegates ND to a groveling big business program so desperate for winning that it tarnishes their image as a top flight academic school that has an excellent graduation rates for student athletes. Lastly, any inflated salary for a new coach will cause ND to be viewed as having lost total control of its perspectives and institutional direction/function and will create a huge number of new ND haters making ND an even bigger target in every game than currently. Paying 2 huge football coaching salaries for the next 6 years also flaunts their financial situation as compared with most colleges that barely break even. I think ND is vastly improved this year winning several squeakers and losing a number of hard luck games. ND has the offense, but they are like many programs that are short on D line. I wonder if Orsini saw this coming and if it impacted his thinking if offered the AD job last year?????????

Paying out big money to two coaches is not an issue.
Look at Alabama. They hire Saban for $4 million per and still had to pay Shula his buyout.
And that was 3 years ago.
No one in Alabama complained. And to this point, all they have is an SEC West title to their name. AND it is likely to be the same this year.
From a recruiting standpoint, Notre Dame does not have facilities that SEC or most Big 12 schools have. And I don't mean the stadium. It's everything else.
That is where the money needs to be spent.
One BCS bowl game will pay off Weis. Two BCS games will pay off Weis and pay for the new hire.
Make the switch. NBC, the masters of spin, will make it seem glorious when the Irish get a new coach.
I hope Central Michigan trounces them in Mobile if they go.

I'm sure Notre Dame isn't worried about any financial issues coming from this decision and my guess is they had money pledged towards any buyout issue. Notre Dame through years of mediocrity continues to enjoy perhaps the largest fan following of any program in the country. They will eventually find their man...who will lead them back to the top of the college football world. I'm sure that challenge will lure some big time coach who relishes the challenge (not to mention the financial windfall)

Good thing we re-upped JJ- just kidding. ND failure is almost as good as SMU success.
