Ok SMU Fans I wanna hear "YOUR" best Pony Story

Postby Dean Heather » Mon Nov 30, 2009 8:23 pm

My Best Pony Story is one of the greatest moments in my sports life period. It was 1981 The Polyester Bowl, last game of the year in Arkansas and somehow me and my best friend Glenn made it down on the field, to the corner of the endzone with around 5:00 minutes left in the game, Eric Dickerson (best running back EVER) took the pitch out from Lance and scored a TD and then ran over both of us and knocked us both flat on our asses!

Come on Pony Fans, let's us ALL hear "YOUR Favorite SMU Sports Moment"

True stories only, mine was just look at the tape of 1981!

GO Ponies~

No real great stories. But my best SMu memories were...
1) Hearing JJ was hired
2) Listening on the ticket at a stoplight when we got the Hail Mary play against UAB . i was a student then
3) When I was a little kid we beat Houston 41-16 (i think that was it) at Ownby
4) Dove hunting when I got a call we had beaten TCU 21-10! Wish I had gone!

Polyester Bowl victory was huge. We won the SWC championship that year but not allowed by the NCAA to participate in the Cotton Bowl. Second place UT took our place as the SWC representative in that Cotton Bowl and I want to say they got trounced by Alabama.

SMU proclaimed the last game of the season that year their Bowl Game and we trounced a very quality Arkansas squad in Fayetteville, thus winning the Polyester Bowl. Very cool.

Still consider Dickerson the greatest Running Back of all time.

Yeah it was us, Lifeson. Never actually saw footage of it. Wonder if that clip even still exists.

My personal All-Time SMU memory has to be when we went to Austin and beat UT 20-6 in 83'.
Lance Mclhenny to Bobby Leach, baby! Those people in Austin could not believe what was transpiring before their eyes.

Sorry Glenn the game was in 1982 in Austin when Lance threw up to Leach and Jitter Fields from UT tipped the long pass and should have had the INT but actually tipped it to Leach for a 79 yard TD to go up 17-10 in the third quarter over the 2nd ranked Longhorns. I remember being there in the end zone with all SMU fans on a CBS Sports Saturday on a beautiful day. The best play was SMU up 23-17 in the 4th and UT was anticipating a running play on third and ? and Lance faked a dive play into Eric and James slipped out for a TD pass to go up 31-17 in the 4th quarter. The crowd was silent. A big upset.

Glenn, I too was at the UT game that year. Besides us kicking there [deleted] my fondest memory of that trip was going to eat bbq after the game in Taylor, Texas. I don't remember the name of the bbq place. But I still remember the comment from a Texas fan when about 8 of us all wearing SMU gear walked in " There everywhere we can't get away from them". When was the last time somebody said that about our fans? If anybody knows the name of the bbq place please post it. I remember the town of Taylor having a bank, bar and the bbq place.

The 1983 Game was at Texas Stadium and SMU lost 15-9 to the 2nd ranked Horns while we were 9th ranked....BTW
This was from Mack Browns's greatest Texas wins:

GREAT GAME
#2 Texas 15, #9 SMU 12
Saturday, October 22, 1983
Texas Stadium (Irving, Texas)
No. 2 Texas took sole possession of the Southwest Conference lead with a 15-12 win at the No. 9 Mustangs. Both SMU and Texas entered the game with undefeated 5-0 records and with nationally-ranked defenses. Texas had to come from behind two times and survive six turnovers en route to the win. The teams traded field goals throughout the first three quarters before Todd Dodge came off the bench to engineer a 62-yard scoring drive. Dodge's 7-yard touchdown pass to Bill Boy Bryant put the Longhorns up 13-6 early in the fourth quarter. SMU then drove 80 yards to tie the game, but Jerry Gray was able to bat down SMU QB Lance McIlhenny's two-point conversion pass attempt. UT added a safety for the final margin. The win snapped SMU's 21-game unbeaten streak.

So you say that SMU lost 15-9, but the write up says that SMU lost 15-12 despite having tied it up at 13-13. Confusing.

If I remember correctly (I was there, but I was in the 3rd grade so I might have missed something) what actually happened is that SMU scored a td to pull to 13-12 and went for 2 rather than kick the extra point for a tie.

I wish I was old enough to have experienced the glory days first hand, but hopefully we are on our way back to that level someday.

For me, it was 24-10. Hands down the most memorable night in my relatively limited pony life (compared to some of you guys). I had already graduated, but I made my way over to the student section where I could really get into the game. Stormed the field with everyone. It was incredible. Dismantling TCU after they beat OU the week before was nice too, especially since so many of my friends are unfortunately frogs.

Other than that, it was opening the new stadium as an undergrad, beating Kansas in the opener, hiring JJ, and 2009 ... in ascending order.

I truly hope that one day, I will be standing at the national championship game watching the ponies, and I can tell my grandkids about the journey I witnessed, along with the history and passion that I have learned along the way, especially from many of you.

Texas was up 13-6, SMU scored to make it 13-12, 2 point conversion failed. Texas sacked Lance with less than a minute to play, for the final score of 15-12.
