I have been really dissapointed at the turnout of the students at the basketball and football games , anyone have a reason for this ? Is there just a lack of interest or are there other university events taking the place of athletics ?

are cowboys boots allowed in Hawaii ?

Lack of interest. poor product on the field ... small student body in general ... some would rather hang on the blvd than attend the whole game. That is all, hopefully, changing!! 8)

I really think SMU needs to organize a "fan re-orientation" campaign next year - Joke at the fact that the average Dallasite (and SMU student) has probably "forgotten" how to properly cheer for the Mustangs after a solid 25 years of being not-that-good and teach them how to do it.

-Wearing Salmon Khaki Shorts/White Button-Up Shirt to the Game (Wrong), Wearing Red and Cheering Loud (Right)
-Being Drunk/By Yourself on the Boulevard (Wrong), Cheering at the Kickoff (Right)
-Wearing UT gear on Campus on Friday before Game day (Wrong), Wearing SMU gear (Right)
-Leaving at halftime to a lame frat party (Wrong), Partying your @ss off after a Mustang win (Right)
-Mumbling Pony Battle Cry (Wrong), Yelling Pony Battle Cry (Right)
-Etc.

I also think June Jones should make a video that is emailed to the student body discussing what he thinks (as a coach) the students could do to create the best home environment/advantage for the Mustangs. Cheer on defense, quiet on offense, or whatever.

I mean like a billboard or TV campaign. Similar to what we did with "Pony Up".

I'm with you on everything except the white shirt and salmon khakis.
Nothing wrong with being distinctive versus every other fan.

Let's get them in the stands before we dictate what they wear :)

That's true, in a weird way salmon khakis and layered polo shirts (collar up) are SMU's houndstooth fedora (a la Alabama):

I am saddened by that fact... :(

Can't argue with that. As long as they're there, I don't care what they're wearing.

Well, as long as it ain't another team's stuff!
I was lucky enough to have box seats at Tulane, and I couldn't get over the [deleted] couple in the first seats outside the window that were both wearing UT hats.

Come on, people, get real...

When I attended in the '80's, SMU was still part of the SWC.

The bottom bowl of Moody was reserved entirely for students. When we played key rivalry games such as UT, Arkansas or Houston, if you did not get there early enough you had to stand for the entire game.

Once SMU left the SWC, attendance suffered.

The fans on this board will attend SMU sporting events regardless, but for the more casual fan, it is difficult to get interested in San Jose State, Nevada, Marshall or UAB.

Winning will help of course, but it will not entirely solve this problem.

To me this is the biggest challenge for Orsini... (besides BB)...ATTENDANCE.

You mean Mustang Corral where they teach the wrong words to Pony Battle Cry?

I saw the same thing for basketball attendance that you described when we left the SWC. Football was already way down. You have to remember, students who came to SMU after the DP didn't come here to cheer for a winning FB program. I recently eavesdropped on one of those bulletin boards where college students leave comments about their schools. Out of a dozen or so SMU students who participated, only a couple of them expressed interest in going to he FB games. Even several of the males who were big football fans commented that they go to the Boulevard, but then head back to the dorm to watch BCS conference games. One commented that a lot of guys haven't been interested in SMU football but instead watch games featuring the big state school from wherever they grew up. I still hold out hope that some day we will be in a BCS conference. Many of our own alums don't consider our programs legitimate since we don't play in one of the big conferences. I still contend that the SEC would be wise to bring us and U of H into their conference for tv and recruiting purposes.

If the SEC felt the need to expand, they would invite Texas and Oklahoma long before they would consider the likes of SMU or Houston.
