Peruna to Hawaii

Someone needs to get a serious campaign started so we can get Peruna to Hawaii. Did he go to the Aloha Bowl in 84? Either way, we need a petition or something stating that it would be completely unacceptable for SMU to go to this game without our mascot.

I'd like to know how traumatized a stallion would be from flying that distance...I know nothing on the subject, other than what's been told by his handlers who note how he doesn't like the trailer as it is. Plus, he's old.

I'm all for renting one out there.

Are you serious? Can you imagine UT [deleted] RENTING a Longhorn if taking Bevo was too inconvenient?

No mascot > RENTING one

We saw on another thread that we can get one in Hawaii and if Peruna flew he would be tranqualized anyway but Peruna could care less about a long travel gig like that and am sure would rather just stay in his stall and smell the girls in the next stall and maybe we could just put a flat screen in his stall and he can watch the Hawaii Bowl over a bucket of hay...its a lot of stress on an animal through all that flight with cages/stalls, check in, paper work, new trailers, etc. and especially for a stallion/Horse...if it was on the main land its ok but the long flight to Hawaii and back is a [deleted] and doubt Texas would fly the Longhorn out there....

This is a concern...I don't mind adopting one for the game, maybe there is a shetland fund that we can donate to and they will hook us up for a day...

I imagine someone on the island would donate "Peruna-for-a day" as a favor/gift to SMU. And he/she would have to be given a number (VIII or IX?) since it would be the official mascot of SMU for the game... maybe at other team events during the week. Better pick one out and get it to the groomer. Peruna can't be lookin' shabby.

At Peruna's current age on such a long flight if he died how would you fellows feel? It would be close to cruelty to an animal. Then we would hear the crap that it was all a master plan to fly an aged old horse on such a long flight to kill him on purpose. Peruna should stay in Dallas.

I think Peruna IX is the young one shown in Culwell's video, is it not? And the current one is VIII? So Peruna for a week could be VIII.5

Does someone with horse experience want to comment? I have a hard time believing a plane ride would be fatal. Why not send the new Peruna for a debut?

I have to agree with VarsityShop on this one. Peruna is 18 and really doesn't like travel, even if it is from his home to SMU. It would be traumatic for him to be faced with a completely novel environment, and there's no telling how he'd react. I'd rather play it safe and keep him here and look into renting a shetland pony. I'd hate for anything to happen to him.

No way would I have flown any of my horses anywhere unless they absolutely had to go. That is a really long flight, why put Peruna thru the trauma?

Its not neccesarily a sure fatal trip but travel is always mentally and physically stressful for animals, especially horses as with the stress the horses could colic, which means their intestine distends and fills with gas first which is painful, and causes the horse to roll around on the ground or a stall to relieve the pain and distress which then can cause their intestines to internally twist( horses die from colic all the time) It may require an emergency trip to the Vet and the vet can untwist the intestines only by surgery and opening up the gut . My wife and their family raise Show Arabians and we actually saved one of our horses two years ago on a truck trip to Canada because we were able to have the trainer get to a local vet quickly and save the show horse via surgery. If this should happen to Peruna in the airport or heaven forbid on a long plane trip you can imagine what could happen.
( I am not a vet and am trying to explain in laymens' terms, so dont shoot me)

They have Shetlands in Hawaii, I would be for renting one and calling it "Island Peruna". BTW will the band be playing the traditional "Shanty Town"? if they go to Hawaii and we win. I can hear the PC police going nuts on that one!

Hawaii's quarantine policy typically requires all animals brought into Hawaii to be in quarantine, which means they basically sit in a cage in an overcrowded area next to the airport. Quarantine can last for four weeks, which distresses some tourists who visit Hawaii for a week or so.

About 5 or so years ago Hawaii set a policy where dogs could be brought to Hawaii with minimal quarantine time *if* they had all their paperwork processed months in advance and could show proof of all shots and medical tests being recently done. The process was so long and costly that we never brought our dog to Hawaii.
