Why did Patterson vote his team No. 2?

Maybe our rivals can shed some light on this on his thinking and all the nuances connected to it. Heck, if I was him -- politically correct or not because of the SEC factor -- I would have voted myself No. 1 in the country. He had nothing to lose. Patterson knew Alabama was going to be a heavy No. 1 so they would have had a vote for No. 1.
By voting No. 1, you're moving Alabama down to No. 2 and Texas down to No. 3 anyway. He's talked about how they deserved an opportunity and I agree with him. As well as they have played this year and to the extent they have kicked everybody this year, I think he should have done that. Maybe his coaching fraternity would have gotten after him for it behind closed doors.
Interesting. Most coaches have their SIDs vote for them and then are usually updated how they voted or consulted on how they want this to look. So did Patterson actually do it or did his SID?
Just throwing it out there.

Cincy leaped over them anyway. They were not going to play in the national championship game even if Texas lost(the BCS would not have allowed it). Cincy would have been in it.

I mean according to the polls. Cincy ended up at #3 in the BCS polls.

That's what the talk is all over Fox Sports and ESPN radio.

The TCU argument was that had Texas lost, they would have moved up regardless of the Cincinnati outcome or something like that.
Again, I just don't understand why Patterson would have not put this out there and vote his team No. 1. What does he care if Alabama isn't unanimous. If you love your team as much as you say you do, put them No. 1 and let the fallout start.

In the tortured world that is the logic of GP, his case was that they deserved a shot, not that they had earned the #1 spot. Therefore you vote your team #2.

I didn't hear that, but that's even more ridiculous. Good God man, fight for your team. Those players fought for you for 12 weeks and did everything you asked of them. You owed it to them.

Mack Brown did that last year as they headed into the Big XII championship game. Had he voted Texas #1 instead of Florida, I believe it would have moved Texas closer to Oklahoma. Had Mike Leach not voted Texas #6 and instead put them at #4 or above, Texas would have been in over Oklahoma (assuming Brown put Texas at #1). At least that is how it was explained to me last year.

They were only .003 points on the computer from #3 in the rankings. Had UT actually lost, his one vote might have been that .003 difference between going to the National Championship game and going to the Fiesta Bowl to play Boise State.

Patterson has defended the BCS system for awhile now. Is he still defending the system since they were sent to the kiddie table or has he changed his tune?

He knew they were not going to be in the National Championship game when he voted. Its a carrot for the kids. He'll vote them #1 if they beat Boise. Guaranteed.

He only defended the BCS because he and his conference were paid off by the big boys. You gotta thin they're regretting that decision.

Maybe he was just doing the stand-up thing if the thought his team truly was #2. I don't think they'd beat Alabama either.
