One anecdote in the Hawaii-Wisconsin game that I found odd is that Hawaii's starting QB, who has not yet been awarded a scholarship, is not allowed to eat at the training table.

Can someone explain this to me? Why is a walk-on barred from having a square meal? Those Rudys need the nutrition more than the blue-chippers do, not less!

Only scholarship players can eat at the training table. I guess Moniz could eat at the training table if he paid for each meal, but that would really come out to a lot of money that he could not afford...as things stand now he has to deliver pizzas at night to make ends meet until he gets a scholarship.

LOL! I bet that his tips saw a nice increase once he became the starting QB...especially since a lot of Warrior fans online mentioned which area of Oahu he delivered pizzas to. Thankfully, he'll get a scholarship soon from what I've heard, so he'll be able to quit the pizza delivery job soon.

I cannot imagine what the NCAA would do if SMU had a starting QB delivering pizzas to the Highland Park area or some of the other areas where SMU fans might live...

I doubt the average person in HP would know. The Starting QB at HPHS would have a better shot of being recognized, me thinks.

I still don't get the principle behind this. I can only assume it's to prevent a school from having guys on de facto scholarships to get around the 85-scholarship limit.

Everyone eats at the same place or places, including SMU players.

You sure about that L Wedge? Doesn't take much googling to find plenty of recent stories about programs and their "training tables". Looks like if anything the rules have opened up to where they are offered year round rather than just in season.

Been there.

The training table can be as luxurious as you want during preseason practice in August.

Vandy is known by all to have the best.

Players living on campus and eating in the dining halls will have the same food as the general population. Stipends are given to those living off campus and will be equivalent to the costs of living and eating on campus.

The root cause of this came years ago when the University of Kentucky built a zillion dollar chalet for their basketball team. The NCAA stepped in at that point and said no more

I have had two go through LSU and the players live and eat in the same places with the other students.

friend was SEC decathlete in late 80s at LSU...they mustve changed it afterward...and loved the food

You are correct.

Broussard Hall was the athletes dorm and dining location at LSU.

This can work to a school's favor like SMU if we can get the food to an exceptional level for all students. This is a big drawing card for potential athletes.

No training table? I'm pretty sure USC has a separate cafeteria for the athletes. At least they did when I was making college visits with my Dad in high school.

The 'SC football guys eat in a cafeteria at Heritage Hall. Maybe it's the same food that the rest of the students get.

It surprises me though because you'd think nutrition would be such a huge concern for programs. I wouldn't be worried about players getting an unfair benefit eating training table steaks as much as I'd worry they'd be eating crap all day if left to their own devices. Talk to some of our coaches about what happened once they started giving Hawaii kids 3 squares a day.

Dont think so, "Majic" is the dude's name as head Chef for training table at Vandy, feeding Prime Rib and Lobsters as we talk, their training table is alive and well in August and during the season, omeletts and egg benedict served at breakfast.

Oklahoma State has the best training table for football players, they have 4 chefs (Thanks T-BONE) preparing footballers training table groceries, if its against NCAA rules, lots of schools skirtin around that
