Three Mustangs Named To C-USA All-Freshman Team
Padron, Johnson & Reed Honored

Dec. 8, 2009

IRVING (C-USA/SMU) - SMU's Kyle Padron, Darius Johnson and Taylor Reed have each been named to the 2009 Conference USA All-Freshman Team, as selected by the league's 12 head football coaches, the league office announced today.

Padron, who was 4-1 as a starter down the stretch for the Mustangs, completed 64.4 percent of his passes for 1,462 yards and eight touchdowns with four interceptions. He became the first Mustang freshman to win his first three starts since 1980.

Johnson played in four games in 2009, catching 10 passes for 107 yards and a TD. Reed, meanwhile, ranked fifth on the team with 56 tackles, including 4.5 for-loss. Reed pulled down an interception in the end zone with 14:44 left in the fourth quarter and helped stop Blazer QB Joe Webb on the potential game-tying two-point try with 13 seconds left in the game in the win at UAB. He saw time in every game this season with one start.

With three selections, SMU trailed only Houston and Tulsa, which each placed a league-high four players on the squad.

Taylor Reed made it, but Ja'Gared Davis who started and had a much bigger impact didn't??

Darius Johnson who made one significant play all year made all-freshman???

Ja'Gared Davis is one of the league's best frosh defensive players period. At several times this season, he basically took over the game. With Reed, Davis and (potentially) Coulter, this could go down as a truly great LB class. Coulter is purportedly 265 lbs. now and was recently timed at 4.5. We really need him to get admitted and for him to step up, as this defense will dearly miss (first team All C-USA) Kennemer.

I guess Margus doesn't count because scholastically he counted as a RS freshman? Too bad. He should have had consideration for both defense and special teams.

Special teams does not have a general or kick blocking category.

Silly me  -- I thought the post meant we got a new gelding so the three would be named, Liberty, Justice, and for all.

Congratulations to the freshmen who made it but looks like whoever did the choosing didn't put much thinking into it. What a joke and a blackeye for C-USA. If they are not going to take these things seriously then don't even pick a team.

I think if you find and read Stallion's analysis on the number of freshmen that played receiver in CUSA, you will see why Darrius was chosen. If there are not many from which to choose then you go with what you have, and he was one of the best at his positon as a freshman. Also, Reed's stats were better than JaGared, and all the powers that select have to go by are stats. They do not get to go out and watch each indivdual game. We just need to be happy we have players on the team. It has been a long time since we have been getting this much post season recognition.

Any awards given to the Mustangs gives credence to the development of the program. DJ has tremendous potential...I know that potential means you haven't done it....(key word coming)...YET! He can be another ES.
