The NCAA contacted us, trying to bully us into simply handing all of our domains over to them. Why? Because they have "ncaa" in them. In my best Lee Corso .... not so fast my friend.

We intend to fight the NCAA on this. We believe we are unquestionably in the legal right to retain these domains under fair use and the first amendment. Even some of the case law the NCAA stated itself in its complaint included domains containing the word "NCAA" where the owner won against the NCAA. We have rounded up the NCAAbbs Legal Dream Team of a half dozen or so board members. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has also expressed initial interest in this, and passed the information along to their attornies. We'll also be seeking the ACLU's support in this.

However, we cannot guarantee everybody involved will act reasonable and rationale. I never let my self be at the mercy of some unknown person of questionable intelligence. ICANN, the body responsible for all internet domain names, can if it so chooses suspend the domain pending a result. (Ludicrous, isn't it?) For that reason we have secured backup names and domains. Please bookmark/write down the following. If for any reason you cannot access any of our sites, use these domains:

NCAA Network <--> Collegiate Sports Network
ncaanetwork.net <--> collegiatesportsnetwork.com
ncaabbs.com <--> csnbbs.com
ncaawiki.com <--> csnwiki.com

WesternNewMexicoHighSchoolFootballMessageBoard.net better watch out!

It means that the NCAA sent out a cease-and-desist letter over the usage of "NCAA" in the domain names, but the legal precedent they cited actually is not in the NCAA's favor. For that reason, NCAA Network which runs NCAAbbs and CUSAbbs is going to fight the cease-and-desist rather than, um, ceasing and desisting.

However, they secured backup domains in case the ruling goes the wrong way. This is because the organization in charge of internet domain names, ICANN, are about as trustworthy as the NCAA.
