With either pads on his shoulders or a whistle around his neck, Forrest Gregg was a legend on the football field.

As an offensive tackle and team captain he led SMU to the Southwest Conference championship in 1955. With the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys he won six NFL championships from 1961 to 1972. The Hall of Famer, whom Packers coach Vince Lombardi called "the greatest player I ever coached," is on the NFL's 75th Anniversary All-Time Team.

He lost a few more games than he won as an NFL coach (75-85-1), but he led the Cincinnati Bengals to the Super Bowl in 1982, where they lost to the San Francisco 49ers.

But there was one thing even he could not do: breathe life into what was once his proud alma mater.

"It was an experience I'll sure never forget," the 76-year-old Gregg said from his home in Colorado Springs, Colo., earlier this week.
