C-USA?

Postby Johnny Rock » Sun Oct 26, 2003 10:32 am

C-USA should not take us into their conference. We do not deserve it. Take a more deserving school like North Texas, UTEP, or La. Tech. SMU does not want to fully commit to Division 1 athletics. SMU will only bring down the entire C-USA with its pathetic play. SMU will bring too much bad publicity to the conference. Do not take us!!!

Check the roster of who is playing. You cannot expect miracles with years of poor talent ahead of Bennett's classes.

Briles' miracle in Houston was afforded fairly good recruits that were mostly redshirted prior to his arrival, and then adding a star Top100 QB that already knew his offensive scheme out of Stephenville, a very unique situation.

Our QB situation 2 years ago foiled any opportunity of developing Bartel. He was a QB that would have needed 3 full years in a system before being truly ready to play, aside from his head-case situation.

2005 is the judgement year, and 2006 is the supposed 'quality' year for Bennett. We will have to hope for a better 2004 since we will have better talent.

I only fault Bennett for dismantling Cavan's defense altogether when whatever 'scheme' he was using under (Larry Kueck?) was successful, and that was what Garrett and Rutledge were used to...I would have stayed with that system for a more solid D until Bennett's talent could be brought in...the point is, we had the Top or a top WAC defense for many years under Cavan's defensive coordinator which would have kept us in many of these games.

I am at a loss as to WHY or WHY our offense has been so pitiful without ROSSLEY as our O.C. in the RUNandSHOOT.

Suffice to say, you cannot expect your Top4 WRs to get much done when the average height is 5'8" and have inexperience QBs.

Better days are ahead for SMU, I do fear however that recruits will not be encouraged to look at SMU due to the 0-8 type records of the past 2 years. If he can still get the same or better recruiting class for next year, then we can be assured of 'guaranteed' better results in 2005/6, otherwise we will be very thin in depth.

I have a friend of a friend (or something) who teaches geometry (I think) in east Texas, but I gather (from our mutual friend) that HS players and coaches are as receptive to the SMU staff as ever. I know the Bennetts have a lot of connections out there, but I have a hard time believing it's true. Of course, I hope it is true. We need more than ever to utilize the coaches' connections to land some studs in February.
