Looks like skull and crossbones to me - players seem to be wearing shirts and hats with the same logo

I believe this is the sticker, which is also what was used at Hawaii while JJ was there.

They should mix that in with some SMU gear - it could be really popular with the younger fans and college age group.

anyone know the origins?

it's actually called a Hawaiian Ikaika with spears.

It is bad enough already that we have cowboys sitting on those horses...we certainly don't need Hawaiian warriors on them.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

Its a cool symbol but kind of strange for us to be using as helmet stickers. I would guess that this has been vetted so that it can't be construed as an advertisement of Jones' foundation??????????
