Who's on Your List To Be the Next Trojan Head Coach?

by Paul Peszko - January 11, 2010

Okay, all you bonafide and non-bonafide athletic directors, who do you think should top Mike Garrett's list to replace Pete Carroll?

Mike Riley has already agreed to an extension through 2019 with Oregon State. Jeff Fisher, as I reported yesterday, has turned down his alma mater and is sticking with the Titans.

Jack Del Rio is interested, but are Mike Garrett and the athletic department interested in Del Rio?

Herm Edwards and Ty Willingham have also thrown their hats into the ring.

Seeing that I don't believe Garrett can convince Chris Peterson to break his five-year pact at Boise St. or lure Gary Patterson away from TCU, then my pick is the guy you see in the photo—June Jones.

Jones just completed his first year of a five-year deal with SMU. Jones has NFL experience as head coach of the Chargers. He resurrected Hawaii's football program, and he's had a successful first year at SMU. The Mustangs were 8-5 and routed Nevada 45-10 in the Hawaii Bowl.

Hire a tough defensive coordinator to go along with Jones' wide-open offense, and USC will be right back in the hunt.

Here's my number two choice. He's actually my number one, but I know it won't happen. He won't leave Utah for L.A. - Kyle Whittingham.

zero chance that Tail-Back U. hires a Run and Shoot Coach. Their tradition at RB is part of what makes USC who they are.

1965: Mike Garrett (RB)

1968: OJ Simpson (RB)

1979: Charles White (RB)

1981: Marcus Allen (RB)

2005: Reggie Bush (QB)

I don't see how USC would ever welcome the Run and Shoot.

Jones just completed the first of five-year deal? Hmmm. I thought he just finished his second.

The only thing relevant about thebleacherreport was the link to the hot babe athlete pictures.

That's web site's a joke. That guy only throws an opinion out there. Looked baseless to me. Just more hopeful. What was it that Dooby said, that anyone can have a blog?

Insane, it is OK to have an opinion that runs counter to the head coach. He loves the Run and Shoot. I don't. And that's OK. There are different ways to win.

Stallion....I hope you are right!
There are not many places June would leave for..but USC could be one.
Some things have me worried....
If more guys keep declining and then USC asks June
June would at least double his pay and his assistants pay.
June and his Hawaii gang of assistant coaches would be much closer to their homes in Hawaii.
And of course the obvious prestige of being at USC.
I sure hope they hire Del Rio or somebody else!

This from today's LA Daily News.

(Del Rio is meeting with Jacksonville owner Wayne Weaver today about the future. Probably going to work out some buyout so he can get an agreed number -- or that's the speculation.)

USC sent a contract to Jacksonville Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio on Monday night, as the former Trojans All-American emerged as the likely successor to Pete Carroll, who officially became the Seattle Seahawks coach.

Del Rio didn't accept the job yet, because his contract with the Jaguars could prove a stumbling block, but the university presented a formal offer Monday. The former USC linebacker will also meet with Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver today. If Del Rio gets fired, the Jaguars must pay him more than $15 million.

If he resigned, however, and took the USC job, Del Rio would not collect the money.

Del Rio emerged as the Trojans' top choice after Oregon State coach Mike Riley and Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher resisted overtures

from the university. Washington coach Steve Sarkisian also informed USC he was not interested, according to sources.
If hired, Del Rio would fit USC's choice of an NFL coach with a defensive background. His hiring, though, would also show that the search didn't cover many candidates.

Sources said Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin was under consideration Monday and former Kansas City Chiefs coach Herm Edwards was contacted to gauge his interest but wasn't a serious candidate.

"I'm working on the next step, and when I finish, you'll hear from me," USC athletic director Mike Garrett said Monday.

Why you worried, man? Jones is committed to SMU, right? It's not about money or him ......

So every coach that has ever had a previous job was not committed to that entity? Or is this more of your "hammer June Jones whenever possible" and overlook the obvious with everyone else?

Why is JJ name not mentioned when these jobs come open? Don't get me wrong, I want him to finish his career at SMU and I assume he has been happy on the hilltop and living in Dallas. But the guy has proven, he can coach college football, he knows how to develop QB's and all he does is win once he has his system and players in place. Why is his name never mentioned? Just curious. Anyone?

PONY UP!!!!

Hes not through here yet with his master plan and still wants to prove his point here (whatever that final point is) at SMU and obviously its not complete yet whatsoever...he's NOT going anywhere...at least not in the near future. But we can say that his name will get mentioned even more often in the coming years with more success on the field and think its amazing that his name is coming up so early in his tenure here....comes with the territory. This is just one guys blog though..

Well, that and a recent history of racking up infractions.
