The best possible news in regard to football on the Hilltop is now a reality thanks to Dr. Turner, Mr. Copeland, and certain members of the faculty! http://www.smu.edu/~newsinfo/releases/00132.html

Also, PonyFans, please contact your friends and invite them to join the site, log on and give opinions. This is a benchmark event in the history of SMU athletics, and we want to hear from as many people as possible.

Thanks

This is LONG overdue.

For years, we've been handcuffed by the prehistoric policy that was in place since A.K. Pye ruled the roost. From what I understand, this will not change our admission standards -- we're still going to be as strict and selective as we have been -- but this allows us to compete for kids who already committed to other schools before we could at least arrange a visit.

OK, Coach Cavan. The handcuffs have been loosened. Let's see you work your recruiting magic.

Speaking of Herschel Walker, I've wondered why he has not been around SMU any during the Cavan regime. If nothing else, I wish they would get him to come in and work with them on strength and conditioning. I know he is purported to only use situps and pushups, but he might be a real asset to the program if there really is a relationship there.

BTW - Congratulations to those involved for this much needed improvement!

Congratulations to President Turner and AD Jim Copeland.

We are leveling the playing field.

With our great school, new stadium, etc. we will see a positive difference for years to come!

Thanks and congratulations to President Turner and Jim Copeland! I think the changes in the recruiting rules will allow SMU to compete on a level field when it comes to recruiting. SMU is a great school with outstanding tradition. I do not think that acacemic standards will be lowered. I am so pleased that this change has come about in a thoughtful and serious manner. This shows a serious committment to the program. I have said all along that the new stadium and training facility would begin a new era in football. An updated and fair recruiting policy was the missing piece. As the team begins to win, alumnae head back to SMU. This will strenthen not only football but all areas of SMU as alumnae stay more in touch with the school.

As recruting gets better, the team starts winning more games - the students and fans better come out and support football.

Graypony,
In regards to your title, DP is over, not yet. But this was a huge step towards that. The DP will be over when we have two winning seasons. That has not happened yet.
