Fresno to throw deep

Postby The PonyGrad » Thu Oct 30, 2003 10:00 am

Nice preview of the FSU game.

The coach did not disguise his game plan. Throw deep on SMU. And why not, it has worked for everyone else. We had better be ready to blitz.

They will score. The big question is can we generate offense this week? That means getting some passing going. Otherwise the other team can just plan to get ahead and have SMU run out the clock.

Don't know if we can outscore the Bulldogs, but you have to assume that Phillips will be given more of the offense this week. He was very limited in what he did last week. I would think they give him more routes/passes, and they'll try to help keep the Fresno defense off-balance by altering the looks and formations they present.

Unfortunately, according to the "Briefs" in the DMN, neither Phillips or Wallis looked very good in the passing phase of practice yesterday...lots of int's and inaccurate passes. Let's hope they do better in todays practice.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

Yeah, that was a little unsettling to read. To have a chance Saturday, Phillips needs to be pinpoint accurate.

What I've been wondering (and this really comes to light after reading the bit in the DMN today about our QBs not even being able to throw a pass) is why the freshman QB at Houston is setting the world on fire (relatively speaking). Art Briles' system is far more complicated, and reliant on a QB, than ours; yet, our QB's can't even master the cadence. What gives?

Because he learned the same exact system from Briles when Briles was at Stephenville.

TRIPLE-OPTION!, how do ya do from Mesquite. You want to remove years of wrinkles from your Face. Tired of being weighed down by the FAN MONKEY blues. Then step right up and try a bottle of TRIPLE-OPTION offense team lotion. It works wonders from the 30's and red zone. See RB's faces light up as there stats grow larger. QB's love doing smoething other than getting sacked over and over again. Recievers drule as there yd. per catch climbs from 5 yd. to 26 yds. per catch. But don't just take our word for it. Talk to many of our happy customer. See Nebraska's Stats on ESPN.com site. Three RB's over 400 yds, 5 recievers over 150. All kinds of happiness from the players because there all helping. Students and fans seem to love it to. Try a free 60 day supply or get your money back, guaranteed. :thumbupcool:

So let's see you want to take a team that seems to have very little confidence right now, and run an offense that requires a lot of confidence in your teammates. That sounds like a winning recipe. I bet you want to put your friend in as the starting QB and have him run it with no practice as a QB this year, boy that just sounds even better. Even if you have experience with the option the results of teams that run it this year have been mixed at best. Nebraska does well with it, but they have built their team around it. Navy has done pretty well with it, but they have played 90% bottom dwellers like SMU, and even then it hasn't always worked. Rice (if my memory is correct) runs the option and they play a schedule similar to ours and they are 1-6.....and how do you get a championship ring winning PS2 on mine they just go to that congratulatory screen and I get to look at the trophy in my trophy case, is there a mail order form or something?

Has anyone ever seen Ashton Nixon play? He has a QB scholarship and set school passing records at Houston Bellaire.

What about Cedric Vinson. Lemming rated him a 4 STAR quarteback recruit when he was a senior at Diboll. Why don't they try him at QB or do something to get him into the game. He was supposed to be a fantastic athlete yet he withers on the bench.

Are these two players being ignored because they were recruited by Cavan? Serious replies only PLEASE!

I was not aware that Cavan recruited any four star players at any position with the possible exception of that DB from the Dallas area who basically vanished.

OK (Abebenzontar)you are questioning me, yet you advertise Dean for President!. I will try to be logical with you but DAM!. Here go's. #1: Yes I do think that this team has players who can win right now. I don't think that it is hard to build confidence between players. The right mix and positioning will achive that. Your second sentence: Answer! If any coaching staff at the D1 level can't coach the Triple-Option, then Dam! Ah! well just Dam!, The STANGS just might be in for a tuff time. As far as a QB to run it!. Yes!, you go to your QB who has full package. Next! "Mixed at best", Well I can point to other teams running the same style offense as SMU having problems to. Atleast the Triple-Option Includes more play makers than One star QB & TB. Last! My Play Station has real players involved. They win, Lose and Bleed together! You might say that dealing with young players is not the same as dealing with college players but you might be surprised at similarities. Especially when it comes to inclusion. It really would take to many words to discribe here. SMU can win right now but due to searching for the right mix, this team is enduring losses. The right mix sometimes takes awhile to be found but it will be because! it is odvious.

What's up with people wanting to make players who are Tight Ends into college quarterbacks? Haven't we tried this ONCE already?

The PonyGrad,

Lemming rated Vinson a 4 Star recruit at quarterback prior to his senior year at Diboll because of his athletic ability. Lemming actually saw the kid play before rating him so high. I believe he had an ankle injury that year, which limited his playing time and numbers. Vinson, did not want to play quarterback, however, preferring to be a wide receiver. My only question is, If he is so athletic, why don't we see more of him on the playing field? And for that matter, why is Nixon being given a shot a quarterback given his size and apparent athleticism?
