RBs for 2010..Ok so now that McNeal is gone then let's focus on what's important... the RBs that actually want to be Mustangs.
Since our #1 RB had better things to do, it makes me think about how our RB position will shape up in 2010. The RBs we will have include :Zach Line, Bryce Lunday, Chris Butler, and BJ Lee. 2010 RB commits are Darryl Fields and Kevin Pope. So with McNeal making his choice, how do you think the RB position shapes up next year? Thanks. Re: RBs for 2010..My guess is that neither freshman will redshirt.
Rise up, Mustang Nation!
Go SMU!
Re: RBs for 2010..hope fields can start. the kid looks like he could be great.
Re: RBs for 2010..
Surely you want to redshirt him but I guess we have no choice?
Re: RBs for 2010..
Your guess may not be right. Fields will not redshirt. Pope is hurt and probably will greyshirt or redshirt. "We will play man to man and we will pick you up at the airport." - Larry Brown

Re: RBs for 2010..I hope Fields can come in and be a standout right out of the chute. He looks great on tape and has the size to play right away.
Line is a great short yardage/blocking back, but I don't think he can be a #1 RB. Lunday is OK, but still isn't #1 back material due to his size/ability. It seems like every year people talk a lot about Butler in the Spring and preseason saying "this will be his year" or " I'm excited to see what he can do". He's been around forever and hasn't made any huge contributions despite the talk. I'm not saying he isn't a good player, but I there isn't anything to be excited about in my opinion. As for Lee, I think he's the wild card. We haven't been able to see much of him, but he does have elite speed and big play potential. It will be interesting to see if he can have similar success compared to other successful small backs like Sproles, Jacquizz, Dexter McCluster, etc I don't feel great about the RB situation, but Padron's growth, great talent at WR and an improved defense give me a lot of hope for next year "I love coaching here at SMU University" -June Jones
Re: RBs for 2010..
In a nutshell we have 1 legitimate RB in Fields, an untested true freshman. I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment and think we should add another back to this class.
Re: RBs for 2010..
In limited plalying time Chris Butler has the following stats. Year C Yds Avg Long TD Rec Yds Avg Lng 2007 22 116 5.3 23 3 0 0 0.0 0 2008 33 174 5.3 38 0 5 14 2.8 10 The O line was not what it is now and his avg is .3 better than McNeils. Sent from my KOREAN knockoff using Tapdance 5
Re: RBs for 2010..
That's a little harsh - if McNeal's family didn't have money issues and he didn't have problems in the classroom, he'd be back. I don't think it's a loyalty thing.
Re: RBs for 2010..is it really? We ran off about 10 Mustangs last year "because they really didn't want to be Mustangs". Some of those had 2 strikes like being 5 minutes late for practice. I think its pretty accurate-he didn't do what was necessary to be a Mustang in 2010. If he wasn't Shawnbrey McNeil would he have been shown the door. Just a reminder there is both an athletic and academic component to "gettin' with the program"

Re: RBs for 2010..Chris Butler is a good back, but has had problems with injuries in the past. He has talent. The question is can Butler now stay healthy enough to play RB ?
Re: RBs for 2010..I would really like to see Butler step up now and become the starter at RB to start the season. I just would hate to see us have to start a true freshman at RB at tech and then tcu the next week...but no way Fields redshirts in 2010 and I think he will play a lot.
Re: RBs for 2010..Butler better get to work, he looks kind of pudgy.
Re: RBs for 2010..I agree
Re: RBs for 2010..
Thank you Stallion. I must admit I'm a little angry he is leaving. I graduated from SMU and my family wasn't rich. But I worked hard and studied hard. If McNeal had wanted to be a Mustang he would have done what it took. As it is, I feel like he is quitting on all of us. The truth is that if he had stayed in 2010, his stock would most likely be alot higher. But he made his choice, just like I made mine back when. Thats why I started this thread. Basically... he's gone... let's focus on the players that want to be Mustangs. SMU Grad 1996 - Worked in SMU athletic recruiting office under Forrest Gregg and Bill Weidner from 1992-1997.
