Time to Cowboy up SMU

It is no secret that y'all have enormous potential. You have the facilities, the resources, good academics, Texas recruiting, & the large market. That is why your new conference made y'all a priority. C-USA desperately needs y'all to be a player ASAP... on the hard court and football field. This Pirate believes in SMU and will be pulling hard for the return of the Pony Express.

With that said (And I meant every word of it b/c whats good for C-USA is good for the Pirates), I have a few questions about SMU football...

How far a y'all off by your estimation?

How much talent do you have in the cupboard?

How is recruiting going so far this year?

Recruiting looks promising. Never know for sure until Feb. Football, the quality players are very young and very raw. We still have a way to go to get competitive in football. The cupboard is not real full, but getting better.

In Men's Basketball, the team is young, but talented. We have the WAC freshman of the year returning at point guard (Bryan Hopkins). We have a project center who seems to be developing. If he develops we could have a very good team. By the time we get to play in CUSA all these guys will be juniors and seniors and while we won't probably win any titles, we could be very competitive.

We usually have a pretty good women's basketball program for what that's worth.

I wouldn't say our bball team is young. We may have 1 SR and 3 JR starters this year, so it's time to sustain or improve on last year's 17-13 season. We should be very competitive on the hardwood by the 2004/5 season.

As for football, we can only hope this coaching staff can build on some impressive early commitments and that this team can show significant improvement on the field next year. Realistically, if they can recruit 2-3 more classes like last year's, we should be competitive again by 2005 or 2006. Times are tough right now as we appear to be bottoming out. Jury is out on whether we have the coach in place who can turn this thing around.

That will be very tough, given that we have to replace Quinton Ross - who did absolutely everything for this team. Also, how much will the only senior (Lowe) play? He might start, but I bet he doesn't get huge minutes.

In response to your post Matt the Pirate...thanks for the encouragement, but SMU will not be competitive in the new C-USA. When we play your team, you can bet your third teamers will see action. SMU will not level the playing field with the other Division 1 schools. We place extra restrictions on our coaches in getting recruits. We also continue to keep a basketball coach around that has only made the NIT one time since he has been here which seems like eternity. SMU is not serious about winning in athletics so we will continue to get humiliated in the new CUSA just as we did in the WAC.

Johnny, shut the **** up already. For god's sake, we wont the WAC comissioner's cup last year. We haven't exactly been humiliated in the WAC.

Upon entry into CUSA, SMU could have the top all-around sports program in the conference.

SMU's overall sports program is strong.

Yeah, you are right...I do not know anything about football. But I do know that SMU has not won a game this season. I do know that SMU has only had one winning season since the DP. I do know that less than 10K people attended the game against Boise St. I do know that N. Texas, T. Tech, OSU, TCU, La. Tech, San Jose St., Fresno St., and UTEP have or will beat the [deleted] out of us with players that SMU did not or could not recruit due to SMU'S restrictive admission policies toward athletes. I do know that unless SMU changes its inept ways it will never draw respectable crowds to the games and we will be forced out of Division 1. I do know that many of you who say that they cannot wait until basketball season will be utterly disappointed. Facts people. I preach facts. The administration preaches bull **** so you will continue to give money. Many of you do not like me based on my posts and that is fine. But truths hurt, especially when you are passionate about something such as SMU. We all want the same thing. However, many of you need to wake up to the realities of SMU athletics and the clueless administration.

With an eye towards being positive, I give Johnny points for not posting in the third person any more...keep it up Johnny, it's much better this way.
