Bowls with a C-USA team averaged 3.138 million.
The Hawaii Bowl was 3rd among C-USA bowls.

The Liberty Bowl had 2.2x as many viewers as the Hawaii Bowl, which validates the point made by many when it looked like SMU would opt out of the Liberty Bowl if they qualified that the Liberty Bowl provided more exposure.

However, the counter to that (also raised by many on here and by JJ as well) is that the Hawaii Bowl is the only game on 12/24 and there are no games on 12/25 so ESPN, etc had little else to talk about leading to a lot of exposure while the Liberty Bowl had a lot of other games around it.

He was wrong.

The Liberty Bowl had over TWICE the viewership as the Hawai'i Bowl. Fan attendance was also over double, I believe - in 25-degree weather! (And ECU, a team SMU beat, was more than a match for Arkansas.)

I hope SMU does not buy into this crap again should the Mustangs compete for the C-USA crown this season.

Bottom line, Jones wanted to take the team to Hawaii over Memphis simply because Jones wanted to take the team to Hawaii over Memphis. If we'd won the conference last year and skipped the Liberty Bowl that would have been BAD for SMU.

We now have proof.

blah blah blah. The real reason people (including me) were upset about Jones' "Hawaii or bust" talk is that it made almost impossible for many of us to go to SMU's first bowl game in years. It wasn't about some incremental television ratings.

I am sure if you looked at the demographics you would find that most of the viewers of the Liberty Bowl were probably form Arkansas. I am sure that the Hawaii bowl had a more wide range of viewers nationwide which is what we needed. And do you have a link or source as to how many people viewed the Liberty Bowl or were you just throwing that out there because of your obvious dislike for June Jones? You sound like you wish we had another coach, do you?

the thing is, SMU LED Sportscenter on Christmas Eve. It was an SMU-a-thon on ESPN that night. I think I saw 20 seconds of highlights from the Liberty Bowl.

Missed the link but my point is still that most of the viewership was probably in Arkansas, Also I still would like him to answer my question as to if he would like SMU to have another coach because every chance he gets he tries to stick it to Coach Jones. So I am waiting on an answer to that question mr pony. Mr Pony would you rather have a different coach than June Jones coaching SMU?

Now THAT is a great point...we saw those highlights over and over again actually for two days. On Christmas Day it was STILL on. You can't discount that much ESPN exposure and viewers that saw us beat Nevada and it wasn't washed out by mutiple other nonsense Bowl game highlights. It was a once in a lifetime event and JJ will now focus on The Liberty Bowl and future BCS games.

There are fewer people in Arkansas than Dallas. The total population is under 3 million.

Arkansas was at 2.85 million residents at the last census, so if every man, woman, child and other residing in the state had watched the game, that would make up.......... about 44% of the games 6.45 million viewers.

I would imagine that the demographics would skew to the Southeast, though, for a game played in Memphis between two southern teams.

By comparison, the DFW metro area (including suburbs) has 6.3 million people.
