Two more leaving

Postby giacfsp » Tue Jan 19, 2010 7:40 pm

Heard that in addition to Bo Levi Mitchell transferring, RB B.J. Lee also is transferring (Jackson State) and DB/special teamer Jay Angotti is going to leave the team and focus on school. Good luck to all three!

Lee's departure is by mutual agreement so he can hopefully find a team where he can play. He was way down the depth chart at SMU.

Wish them well. It's the right decision for all of them. Glad to have the scholarships available, although I believe Angotti was a walk-on.

Too bad about Lee. I was hoping we would be able to see more of him with Shawnbrey gone next season. I bet he does really well there Best of luck to him.

Shame about Lee, I thought he would become a poor man's Trindon Holliday for SMU. He should get all the playing time he wants at Jackson State, their offensive skill position talent is lacking.

Recruiting 101 question. We can sign 25 per year, 85 maximum. When kids leave early such as McNeal, Mitchell, and Lee, do the scholarships that open count against the year they signed rather than the current year? In other words, all other things equal, would those 3 leaving give us the capability to sign 28 as long as we are under the 85?

You can't sign more than 25 in any one year.

NCAA guideline.

NO exceptions.

WRONG-you can sign as many as you want as long as no more than 25 count for a particular recruiting year by showing up in August (and then again if space left at midterm). About 40% of schools oversign every year

Here is some NCAA discussion on this very subject. Apparently some of the conferences have limits on the number of letters of intent that can be signed.

Troy signed 40 last year

Ole Miss signed 38

I believe the SEC responded by limiting signees to 28 this year

Ballpark-we have about 57-58 definites on scholarship-add 3 greyshirts enrolling today-not sure of 2-3 more that might have permanentt injuries that I didn't count and then there are the kids who have won their appeals last year-I think those were for an additional year but not sure if they will count in August 2010. But we've already trimmed a huge number of players from the roster this year and still have until about August 1st to trim more. We probably can take a full 25 and even more if some greyshirt. I wouldn't be surprised if there are a few more transferring out

I thought those appeals only gave them the 09-10 school year. This is an evolving process. Change with JJ is good. We still have a ways to go but we are slowly getting there.

I go back to my original question. Against which class do signees designated to replace those who quit, transfer, etc. count. IF, we were well below the 85, and no other factors were involved other than 3 players leaving, could we bring in 25 or 28?
