Update on the Overton in Lubbock

Postby Pony in SA » Mon Feb 01, 2010 3:06 pm

Just spent 3 days end of last week at the Overton Hotel in Lubbock for work. I know there was a posting earlier about getting room there for our game, so here are some of my thoughts on the Hotel:

1. It is really not that close to the stadium. From the stadium it is across University Avenue (5 lanes), behind new strip center and then long parking lot, in among some apartments/residence housing. More than a couple of blocks. Within walking distance probably, but not "right behind the stadium" as advertised.

2. For "new" hotel walls already beat up and need painting touchups, and in my room plug socket came out when I tried to plug in laptop. Hotel seemed to already have alot of wear and tear.

3. Staff was mixed. When I checked in very friendly, but on other occassions pretty rude. A lot of Tech hotel managment students work there so not the most polished.

4. Restaurant was not bad, but ran out of some items. We got caught in the ice storm/snow on Thursday and tried to order room service and they were out of several basic things. Also it took quite a long time just to get some soup and simple sandwiches sent up.

It was not horrible place, just don't know if would pay extra money to stay there if your main reason is to be "right behind the stadium."

Also, I wore my Hawaii Bowl champs t-shirt one night and got some looks. One guy at the bar asked if I went to SMU and said Tech really wants to get us for the James/Leach thing. He didn't want to hear any facts about lack of connection b/tween SMU/James. There also were several cars/trucks still painted with "Team Leach" or "Go Leach" on their rear view mirrors. I assume those are mostly the students, but on TV last week they were still talking about Leach.

yes but you didn't have the premium benchfront suite for $169 a Nite. Is there a nice Hotel in Lubbock? I can't think of one that even has a quality reputation. If it has a bed, a place to pee and a TV with cable you are ahead of the game

Thanks, but I'm still staying at the Overton. If it's 3 or 4 blocks from the stadium instead of 2 blocks well thats still pretty darn close. And if you can walk to the game, for some that can mean not having to rent a car. How "beat up" can the Overton really be when it's only been open since September 2009? Go Mustangs-Beat Tech.

I just looked at the overhead map, and if include the Jones Stadium parking lot, it's a two block walk. What's the big deal, mabey you can pitch a tent on the 50 yard line.

I was simply passing on my impressions. Never trying to tell all you guys not to stay there, just it was not exactly right behind the stadium" only feet from the stadium if that is what you want. It was a nice place to stay and I would stay there again, but the picture that makes it look steps from the stadium is deceiving. It is across University but yes you could easily walk it.

Just wanted you to know there are some $79 and $89 places out there, and if you were paying $149 or so to be feet from the stadium you wouldn't be. You would have a little bit of a walk.

Well, it's already been open for one Tech football season...

I noticed that, too. Usually, abbreviations eliminate keystrokes...or should that be k/ystrokes?

There is only 1 place closer, and that's the Days Inn on the corner right across from the Jones Stadium parking lot. I've been staying there since I met my husband and we started going out to Tech for games (both SMU and others whenever SMU doesn't have a home game or an away game I'm going to). It is bare bones motel with exterior doors, uncomfortable beds, pretty nasty bathrooms, an elevator that smells like pee, and free "breakfast" which is generally cereal, the Texas shaped waffle for which there is always a line, and really disgusting sausage biscuits heated in the microwave (and this assessment comes from my husband who usually loves him some sausage biscuits). There are no other amenities. But we stay there because it comes with a free parking pass and we can walk right across to the game. We can "slum" it for a couple of nights.

We watched the Overton being built basically out the back of the Days Inn across another parking lot, maybe an additional block from the stadium. I asked my husband to check out the price difference to see if it would be worth it to upgrade our accomodations to something a little nicer than the Days Inn, but still with the convenience of not having to drive to the stadium. For the SMU weekend, the price difference is only about $40 a night (I think $110 (which is a rip off for the Days Inn, but that's what they do on game weekends -- it's much more for big games) vs. $150 for the Overton, so we'll be giving it a try Labor Day Weekend.

But whichever way you choose, since those are the 2 options within walking distance, you need to book early. Also, be aware that the Days Inn, and I suspect the Overton too have a minimum 2 night stay on game weekends.

There are plenty of other options out on the "loop" (and in the past the team has stayed at the Sheraton on the other side of campus) if convenience to the stadium is not a priority for you.

I knew TTech was going to try to take our their frustrations on SMU because Craig went here.
