Texas to the Big 10?

A buddy of mine from Purdue said he'd heard that UT was evaluating an offer to move to the Big 10 whereby they'd get a $12-15 million "bonus" per year.

Anyone else seen or heard anything about this?

Yes, it's on Colin Cowherd. Apparently, according to Forbes Texas is the most attractive. And we know that Texas is huge for the money and recruits.

A buddy of mine saw Bigfoot streaking down the Boulevard..

Texas can evaluate that all they want - the deep pocket alums at that school would never allow that to happen. Even UT isn't that dumb

Tradition still means something in Austin to the Old School guard. Even if it made sense financially, it just wouldn't happen unless a lot of Old alums dropped dead.

For example - see NCAA Football playoff. Will never happen until the old guard steps aside. It can make a lot of sense financially too.

Yeah, I find it hard to believe something like that could happen. I just wanted to know if anyone else had heard about it to add some substance to the rumor.

It would be a good way to win a conference championship every year, though.

What would the have to gain really? They are one the few programs making a substantial profit they play their very long time rivals and end up being in the top 10 year after year. Moving the Big 10 wouldn't do anything but increase their travel costs I would think.

Note: I think Texas to the Big 10 is a dumb rumor.

This will never, ever happen. Ever. Big Ten's ideal scenario would be to get ND, which isn't likely. Then it will either be Mizzou, Pitt, Syracuse, possibly Nebraska, also UConn would be an interesting fit.

Won't happen. Notre Dame will not give up its independent affiliation any time in the near future, either.

Now being reported on ESPN:

Beyond breaking up the football rivalries, I can't imagine Texas baseball would be too excited about playing in the Big 10. Makes me think Texas is trying to get some leverage for a better share of their TV revenue with the Big 12.

It would at least force Big 10 to expand by 2 schools. A&M will never be permitted to separate from Texas, particularly given the state of Texas politics. With television contracts up for renewal, and with the Big 10 already possessing its own television network, Texas and A&M will not simply open up a market in Texas, they will provide instant ownership of the state.

Missouri or Rutgers still might be taken at this point by the Big 10 for added television revenue or to provide an even number of teams.

If such expansion happens (and it will if Texas wishes it so), then the Big 12 is no longer the Big 12, what with the loss of Colorado to the Pac-10 already looming.

Look to see whether the expansion by the Big 10 to a possible 13 or 14 is the only one of its kind, or if it will spread to other conferences.

Missouri is already in the Big 12.
