Shroeder makes some good points here for expansion for them to focus only on Texas, even though Texas turned them down when the SW Conference broke up....won't happen.
The TV markets that Utah and Colorado provide are only the 16th and 31st in the nation as opposed to the Houston, DFW, San Antonio and Austin markets that would come with Texas...would be huge if they could get UT.

Again this just ain't happening-the only way the PAC 10 could make it somewhat appealing is to package Texas, A&M, Colorado, and Oklahoma to make it more regionally realistic. Plus Texas wouldn't have to play A&M and OU in non-conference to continue long standing rivalries. Arizona and Arizona St and probably Stanford could form a Division. But Oklahoma St would [deleted] in the legislature I'm sure. Guess you could leave Colorada out and add Oklahoma St. instead. Or if SEC wanted Texas A&M and A&M was willing to split. But the only way this works is to form a big conference

texas legislature wouldn't let ut and a$m split in 94. ut wanted to go to the pac 10 and a&m to the sec. hence the big 12. ut and a&m are a package deal.

Seems to me the SEC could make a play for UT, A&M, OU and OK State to create a league that would devastate all others. Probably insist on 3-4 BCS Bowls.

the same Govenor(Baylor), and other Big cat Legislators like John Monford(Tech) and I know I'm missing one-aren't around this time. The package deal in the SWC breakup was Baylor and Tech because key legislative and gubernatorial figures happened to be from Baylor and Tech. Not so sure that would play out the same as long as UT and A&M went in the direction they preferred and as long as Rivalry continued.

I thought Bullock was the guy pulling for Tech.

you got it Bob Bullock-I knew I was missing someone. Bullock held dual degrees from Texas Tech and Baylor Law. Texas Tech alumnus Montford, who later served as Chancellor of Tech, I believe was the head of the Senate Finance Committee-ie the "purse-strings"

An interesting scenario. If Missouri then joins the Big 10, it would leave the Big 12 in need of five teams. BYU, Utah, TCU, and Houston would all be certainties. It would then be left to SMU to contend with the likes of Air Force and Colorado State for the last position.

Would that then make it the Little 12?

I doubt he gets elected, and if he does, I doubt he'll have the clout to affect that either way.

UT is in an envious position. Everyone wants them. UT will have many good options when the dominoes fall. If the Big-12 gets raided, I really don't see UT settling for patching it back together with a bunch of marginal schools like TCU and UH. If I had to take a guess, I would say that if the Big-12 blows up, UT and A&M will end up in the SEC. Normally, I wouldn't think the SEC would be interested in expanding beyond 12 schools. But UT is so freaking valuable that I would think the SEC would have to take a very hard look if that became a possibility.
I think UT has to consider A&M for political purposes. I don't think they give a crap about Baylor or Tech. They certainly don't give a crap about TCU or UH.

Texas Tech graduate Pete Laney of Hale County near Plainview in West Texas a strong proponent of Texas Tech was Speaker of the House at the time. Tech and Baylor really had some muscle at the right time. This DMN account details how Laney and then Bullock basically warned UT and A&M officials "no Deal" without Texas Tech and Baylor

I agree that it would make sense for the SEC to go after UT and A&M from any way you look at it. Problem is that I still believe UT will not go into any conference that it cannot dominate politically. And I don't think the GA, FLA and TENN folks who pretty much call the shots in the SEC would play well with the Texas schools. Texas is absolutely a big whore, but DeLoss Dodds is a control freak and an egomaniac who is unwilling to play on an equal playing field with anyone.
