1968 SMU History Question...

Postby Bilbo » Sun Feb 21, 2010 1:08 pm

I researched the archives on this website and i noticed someone started a thread about SMU's 1968 offense. Well, that got me curious, and, thru some further research I think that SMU may have been the first collegiate football team to install the west coast offense (less complicated than Bill Walsh's of course). Seeing as Hayden fry ran a west coast offensive scheme at iowa some years later, I was thinking that he probably ran a similar offense at SMU. If this is the case, then SMU's 1968 team was more innovative than they are already given credit for. Now, because I'm only 20, I don't really have much more footage of SMU's 1968 team than a few clips. I was wondering if ne1 on here who might've been around during those times could confirm these findings.

The Heritage Hall DVD collection includes some full game videos from 1968 including the Bluebonnet Bowl win over Oklahoma.

Interesting observation. Chuck Hixon who is intimately involved in both the Letterman's Association and Mustang Club was the QB during those times. If you are on campus, you might have the Mustang Club secretary carve out a few minutes with Chuck when he is on campus and get his observations. I will forward to Chuck and see if he or Mike Richardson might answer this question.

We ran a pretty basic pro style with emphasis on the passing game from what I recall. I was defense so did not work directly with the offense but I would not characterize us as a west coast. We had two wide receivers, and a tight end. Two backs in the backfield and threw primarily verticle. Lots of curls and lots of slants. I am not a west coast expert but I do not think that fits the mold of what you are speaking.
