Is there an alcohol ban?I'm sure this topic has been visited numerous times but couldn't find anything. Is there an NCAA ban on selling alcohol at on campus stadiums? Or is that just a school by school decision?
As many have pointed out before, attendance - especially student attendance - would change dramatically if kids could go to these games and keep drinking. Really wish SMU would look into this.
Re: Alcohol ban?It has just blown the lid off of attendance at Tulane by selling beer in the SuperDome.
The students are drinking now on the Blvd. The ones that stay out there and drink do not care about the game. Why would they go inside and pay for high dollar concession beer when they can drink cheap on the Blvd? If they cared about the game, they would devise ways of getting their outside alcohol into the stadium as people have done for decades. I have no argument against alcohol in the stadium but the argument that it would bring the students in just does not fly with me. All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand

Re: Is there an alcohol ban?And after the alcohol related deaths a few years ago, it would be horrible PR for the university. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's only off campus/pro stadiums that serve alcohol at games.
Re: Is there an alcohol ban?Beer and marguerita's are served at Cougar High stadium on campus.
Re: Is there an alcohol ban?Location in wet or dry districts has some impact too as to whether or not you can sell booze in the stadium. UP is a dry district.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
Re: Is there an alcohol ban?Alcohol sales at FBS games are left up to individual schools and in some case conferences, there is no NCAA rule against it. As mentioned, they sell beer to the general population at Houston and Tulane in C-USA and for many schools out west, beer flows regulary at the concession stands.
I wish they would sell beer, but I doubt it would really have a boost on attendace and would probably cause more problems. Drinking on the Blvd should be sufficent, and if you can't make it through the game without a drink, sneak it in like so many do. Probaly won't happen...BUT...maybe it will!!
Re: Is there an alcohol ban?We used to love to go to Rice Stadium to watch games because they sold beer. Of course back then we were legal at 18!
Re: Is there an alcohol ban? What is the Texas legal drinking age now? It changed 2 or 3 times while I was there.

Re: Is there an alcohol ban?the same legal drinking age that exists for every single state in the US
Re: Is there an alcohol ban?
But you can sell alcohol to people in "clubs," which is why alcohol is sold in the stadium club. I have said on here before - if you simply add a one-day "club membership" to each ticket sold, you can sell alcohol in Ford Stadium.
Re: Is there an alcohol ban?
Yeah...and we can increase our attendance numbers by the number of TABC agents at the games looking for under age consumers. ![]() SMU's first president, Robert S. Re: Is there an alcohol ban?
That's a reason I will miss losing...you could do whatever you want and nobody really cared, because let's be honest, nobody was there to really care about it. Winning is nice though.
Re: Is there an alcohol ban?Selling beer many not boast attendance, but it will boast revenue. They sell beer at the UALR basketball games. From the little I have seen, it doesn't seem to be detrimental to the crowd. The vendors are limited, there is an ID check one goes through before buying beer. The line is present at all times of the game. The student section looks just as thin as ours. I am not advocating selling or temperance, just noting that beer sells could be a high margin concession.
Re: Is there an alcohol ban? When we played at the Cotton Bowl, during the State Fair, you could go to the Concession Stands right outside of the stadium and buy a beer and drink it there and go back into the game. I don't look at selling alcohol as some panacea. For one, beers would be $7-9. It gets real expensive to get drunk at those prices. And then there is smuggling. Airline sized booze bottles are available at liquor stores and are perfect for a needed boost. They were invaluable during the Navy game a few years ago (40 degrees and pouring).
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
