Should Texas Declare Its Independence (from Big XII)?

The argument for the University of Texas dropping the Big 12 in favor of either the Big 10 or Pac 10 loses more of its flavor each time it gets cooked. Of all the reasons originally given, a gain of approximately $11 million dollars is really the only one left standing.

If that amount of extra cash is enough to give the university something to think about, how long before someone down in Austin starts checking into the monies gained by Texas forsaking all conferences and becoming an independent program?

The only thing better than a really good revenue sharing program is not having to share at all.

UT isn't going anywhere unless the Big 12 falls apart. If Missourri and Colorado bolt for other conferences, then they lose 3 biggest Big 12 TV markets outside of Texas, and the only chance to salvage even part of their current TV deal is to bring in Utah- a school that would likely be part of PAC 10 expansion.

I'm sure UT is looking at alternatives to the Big 12 in the event it starts to implode, but going independent wouldn't be part of it. Besides, politics will probably dictate that UT, A&M, and maybe TTU remain together in some conference.

Worth think about. Texas could build up TV network of their own and schedule all the major schools like ND does, and in a few year could increase incoming cash by 25%.

Intriguing idea, but if not part of a major conference, televised UT games would have a much smaller audience outside the state. Not to mention the loss of sharing of all of those locked in bowl tv dollars they share with the Big 12 members. I don't see De Loss Dodds going the independent route, and I don't see the Texas Legislature letting it happen if it cuts TTU an A&M o ut of the deal. Especially if Gov Hair-do gets re-elected.
