CHRIS PHILLIPS TO START

Phil Bennett stated in his Press Conference today that Phillips will start this weekend. When asked if he would rotate quarterbacks, he hesitated and said that Phillips would play (i.e., stopping short of saying that Wallis would not play). He stated that Wallis has simply not performed when he had the chance, and that Phillips needed to grow.

Exactly what I wanted to hear. Let's hope Coach Bennett sticks to it.

For those that want to listen to the entire prsss conference, it is available on smumustangs.com

Phillips starting is big news? Bennett announced a couple of weeks ago that he was going with Chris the rest of this year. He started last week, too, but will continue to rotate with Wallis as he learns the position. Don't equate Bennett's confirming that Phillips will start with his saying he will take more snaps this week. That will depend on how he does against La Tech. Our biggest concern this week has to be how are we going to get any pass ruch with 3 DL playing on gimpy legs and how deep are we in the secondary because McCown will wear those guys out! There's a reason La Tech is a 22 pt favorite.

How is this news any different? He's said this before - Yea, he'll start the game w/ the 1st 3 plays and get yanked for Wallis

It is different if you believe Bennett's own words (pls see smumustangs.com). Again, a reporter asked if he was going to rotate quartbacks and his answer was "Chris is going to play". He also specifically addressed Wallis' inability to deliver when given the opportunity, and referenced the many sacks he took by holding on to the ball too long, as well as his fumbles.

When talking about Phillips he compared him to Donavan McNabb when running with the football.

Bennett may change on game day, but his comments today would lead you to understand that Phillips will play the majority, if not all of the snaps. Let's hope.
