Sell me on the Mustang Club??

Postby Texasscout96 » Tue Mar 02, 2010 4:59 pm

I graduated in 1996. I spent 4 undergrad and 1 GA year working in the SMU athletic recruiting office for Forrest Gregg and Jim Copeland. I have ALWAYS supported SMU and SMU football.

But I just don't see the benefits of the Mustang Club. I joined the MC in 2008 at the Pony level and never saw a single perk. All I got for being a MC member were invitations to golf tournaments (of which I HATE golf).

For this reason I did not renew my membership. Now I am supposed to believe that SMU winning 8 football games last year is worth me shelling out $500 for the Mustang Club??

I guess if I saw some benefits of membership it would be a little easier to do. But with no interest in SMU golf tournaments I am forced to rationalize the new rules as 6 football games for $500 (MC membership) + $130 (tix) which would be $630 for 6 games... So $105.00 per SMU game??? Are you kidding me?? I would not pay $100.00 to see a Cowboy game at Jerry World.

I called over to the ticket office because I was sure I was misunderstanding the rules.. Anyway, I am a proud Mustang and I am proud of the team. But could someone please explain to me the logic of paying $105.00 per game for football tickets?

For that price, if the team loses, I'd want a refund.

That's just my truth of the matter.

Get together with 3 other guys and buy 4 tickets. The per game cost for each seat goes down to $43 per game...assuming they split the MC donation amount with you.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

I totally understand where you are coming from. I have been raising money for M-Club for 19 years... keeping the faith, working to get better at M and W Bball and get just respectable at football.

The university had rules that were tougher than the NCAA, but I kept calling and believing. Over time ( and because of support ) these rules changed.

Big change came through the new people on the Faculty Senate and then the hiring of Orsini.

The drive and focus at SMU has changed to be squarely on winning. And I mean winning without the BS cheating stuff. Winning by hiring the BEST coaches and giving even marginal academic young people an learning center to help them achieve their school work. ( That was funded by M-Club and donations directly to the Lloyd center )

What do you get ?- Pride that you helped.

You get a Tax Deduction
You get window decal, memebership card, invitations to lunches ( really need to go to those ).
You get ability to purchse good parking.
You get ability to get good seats ( When we win next year, good seats are going to be harder to get ).

You get FREE entry into the Boulevard tent for food and drinks. ( that might be worth the price right there).
You get to go to get free drinks and snacks at some Basketball games during halftime.

Did I mention that you get Pride for helping the teams and the university that you love.

Send me a PM and I'll give you my cell number and we can talk more.
Peace be with you.

And another reason is the more members we have in the fund raising arm of SMU, the better it looks to maybe Conferences looking to expand? The $ goes to improving the overall experience of the athletics of SMU. Plus you don't have to give $500, just contribute something so the membership numbers are respectable and know that as above from Bus.....'.Did I mention that you get Pride for helping the teams and the university that you love.'

Heck give $50...whatever you feel comfortable with. The football ticket prices have been compressed for some time anyway.

I think the best ROI on the Mustang Club is the Mustang Club Tent at the pony level staring at $250.00
Three beers and a plate of BBQ anywhere would run about $20.00. Multiply that by two = $40.00 a game time six games =$240.00 Plus I'm a member.

I believe there are plenty of good season ticket seats in Ford Stadium that do not require
a Mustang Club Membership, and certainly plenty available with a much smaller Mustang Club membership. You only have to PonyUp the $500 if you want season tickets on the pressbox side
in the primo sections. You have plenty of great options at Ford Stadium if you decide to not
pay the $500 MC level.

best/only reason to join the Mustang Club is because you want to support our athletic programs. It's not really all about what the club can do for you. If you are a fat cat and want to feel special, then give enough to sit in primo seats on the home side. If you just want good seats at Ford, sit on the visitor/student side. It's difficult for me to imagine the day when Ford will sellout regularly, but even if that happens, there really aren't any bad seats in the entire place.

The way I figure it is this. Every year I donate money to the engineering school and the mustang club. I want to be able to support the athletics department, as well as the school I graduated from.

The only difference is that the Mustang Club donation, in addition to helping the athletic department, gives me back the added ability to purchase certain levels of football tickets, parking, gets me into the Mustang Club tent on the boulevard, allows me to attend the lunches, and in general keeps me in touch with SMU athletics.

So, I guess my perspective would be that I donate money to support the university. It just so happens that I probably get more back with the athletics donation than I get through the engineering donation. So, personally, I don't work the amount of money I give to the athletic department into my season ticket cost.

Just my take on it...

If you want to be sold, just comparison shop and see what you would have to pay at Texas or even TCU for the ticket locations, parking, pre game and signing day gatherings. The Mustang Club is value..
