Memphis Coach Telling Kids UM to Big XII

Postby leopold » Sun Mar 14, 2010 1:35 pm

Interesting Rumor on Memphis and Tennessee boards: Larry Porter, the new HC at Memphis, is telling potential recruits that Memphis is going to be the next school in the Big XII. Not saying this is impossible, but I would imagine it's a bit of a stretch. Porter coached with Nebraska's HC, Bo Pelini, at LSU and he's bound to have some contacts within the conference so he can't be completely in the dark, either way.

....and the plot thickins......

Highly unlikely, IMO.

Memphis brings nothing to that table. Little chance for that rumor.

Never happen. Little to no value for Big XII. Wishful thinking.

The Average 12 is a football-first conference, so I agree that Memphis adds zero.

With 2 teams in top 25 in baseball and three others receiving votes and 3 teams in basketball (including no. 1) and another receiving votes. 4 teams in golf top 25 (including no. 1).
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Try not to muddy up an argument around here with facts.

Major conference expansion is all about eyeballs.

Memphis is the No. 48 television market, just ahead of Austin and a couple of spots below Oklahoma City.

That makes it attractive as a Top 50 market. Although I'm sure the SEC dominates viewership in Memphis, I would guess that Memphis U. gets better ratings than SMU does in Dallas, or UH and Rice do in Houston.

The Big 12 is looking for a huge TV deal like the Big Ten and SEC have, but its geographic footprint can't match the population numbers of those conferences. Too many underpopulated areas in the Midwest and West Texas. Outside of the major Texas cities and Kansas City, not much for the Big 12 to hang its hat on. Denver and St. Louis are within the Big 12's geographic footprint, but those are "fringe" cities for the Big 12.

Unless the Big 12 gets picked apart, it won't be adding schools in areas that it already dominates or schools that can't enhance its TV value.

Oh, and kids get told all sorts of nonsense during recruiting. Telling recruits your school will be invited to the Big 12 works because, even if it were true, all parties would deny it at this point.

UTSA announces three-year deal with Baylor in football
By
Jerry Briggs

UTSA has announced that it has agreed to a contract with Baylor for three football games to be played from 2017-19, including a 2018 contest at the Alamodome.

The series will kick off on Sept. 9, 2017, at Floyd Casey Stadium in Waco, followed by a home game on Sept. 8, 2018, in San Antonio. The series will conclude on Sept. 7, 2019 in Waco.

"We are thrilled to be able to announce a series with Baylor and even more excited to bring a team of that caliber into the Alamodome for a home game," UTSA coach Larry Coker said.

The games against Baylor are the first that UTSA has announced against Big 12 competition.

UTSA will open play in 2011
