Billy Embody--possible SMU walk-on

QBs are often converted to other positions and I'm guessing he won't be a QB at SMU.

As the modest-sized quarterback of a small, independent private school, Billy Embody likely wasn't going to draw the attention of a Division I program with his arm.

But he has with his academics. An honor student at Carrollwood Day, Embody appears close to landing with SMU as a preferred walk-on.

Patriots coach Lane McLaughlin said Embody, who owns a GPA of over 4.1, already has received two academic scholarships from the private, Dallas-based university that would cover nearly all his tuition. Additionally, he's a candidate for SMU's Hunt Leadership Scholarship.

In CDS' only two years of 11-man football, Embody has thrown for nearly 3,900 yards, 43 touchdowns and 19 interceptions.

Got a bunch of them Hunt Scholars here in Pennsylvania. State celebrates them by having a high school holiday on first day of deer season.

Update.

Patriots quarterback Billy Embody will join resurgent Dallas-based program Southern Methodist University as a walk-on after earning two academic scholarships from the school, CDS coach Lane McLaughlin said.

Embody, who owns a GPA above 4.0, visited the SMU campus this past weekend. He's also in line for the school's Hunt Leadership Scholarship which, in addition to his two academic scholarships, would cover his annuaul tuition with some left to spare, McLaughlin said.

"He's already got an SMU bumper sticker on his car," McLaughlin said.

would cover his annuaul tuition with some left to spare

And SMU will take away that "some left to spare" and not give it to him, despite the fact that it's already been awarded.

It is SMU policy that SMU merit scholarships, when combined, may not equal more than the total cost of tuition and fees. Room and Board? Pay it yourself...SMU doesn't care that your scholarship SHOULD cover that too.

Wow, that is different that UT's policy. I ended up going to UT as an undergrad (yes, you can hate me now, especially because the SWC still existed back then) and made a *huge* profit due to merit scholarships. I ended up with 3 merit scholarships (2 from UT, 1 from National Merit), and I even wrote UT to inform them that I would be getting much more than tuition+room&board would cost. They told me that I could have all the scholarships at the same time, so my parents told me that I would be going to UT instead of CalTech (90% scholarship) and the other schools I applied to.

My parents were public school teachers in Hawaii and they sacrificed a lot to save up money for my college fund. Once they realized that I didn't need that money, they bought new cars for my Dad (he really needed a new truck), Mom (her station wagon was 10 years old), and sister (who was 16 then and didn't even have a driver's license). Somehow I didn't get a car out of my college fund even though they all got new cars...I had to work for 9 months at JPL to save up the money to buy my own car.

Are the graduate fellowships that SMU gives also the same way? UT actually recruits something like 1% of their graduate students (flying students in for 3-day recruiting visits just like athletes)...the fellowship was so generous that I actually qualified for a loan to buy a great condo walking distance from campus when my sole income was the fellowship.

Not sure about this.

Yeah, I had that happen to me when I was applying for undergrad...not by UT, but by Notre Dame, Richmond, and South Carolina.

These are Billy Embody's senior season statistics

Completions:93
Attempts:146
Passing Yards:1836
Touchdowns:25
Interceptions:6

He also ran for 146 yards and 4 touchdowns!
He is a good athlete. Some might consider him as a duel threat type of quarterback.
