DERRIUS BELL: Planning a return engagement

Postby PonyPride » Wed Mar 17, 2010 3:41 am

Cornerback Derrius Bell won't be taking part when the Mustangs return to the field for spring. He had surgery a week ago to repair a torn rotator cuff, but more importantly, he is still trying to get clearance to return to the field in 2010 after suffering a pair of concussions last year that ended his season two months early.

Bell visited with PonyFans.com to discuss what it was like watching his teammates win games and play in SMU's first bowl game in 25 years, what his concerns are regarding head injuries, where he stands in process of getting medical clearance to return to the field, and what his choice will be if he gets that chance.

Most importantly, I wish nothing but good health to Derrius. Anything beyond that, in terms of returning to the field, is a bonus, as far as I'm concerned.

Second: terrific story, the kind nobody else can do for us. Thanks.

I wish him the best regardless of what his ultimate decision is. I'd love to see him back out there for us, but even if he doesn't make it back, he can walk away knowing he gave all he had.

Thanks and I love the way this kid plays and hope he CAN play for us again but if not, he still is a Mustang always. Get your degree if you can't play, work as a student/coach for the DB's to help as a last resort.
Good luck DB!

I will never be able to forget that hit in the TCU game he laid on that WR, I was sitting in the student section and have never seen such a powerful, and quickly scary moment in SMU defense. Get better Darius, We would rather have you offer moral support and be on that sideline with your team rather then jeopardize your own health by playing.

These are the kinds of stories (reports) that make www.ponyfans.com so awesome! Thanks! Keep up the great work!

And here's hoping that Derrius makes the decision that is best for him once he sees the neurologist on March 23. I'll be praying for him.

Protect your health above everything else, Derrius. If you can play again, we'll all cheer for you. If you can't, we'll thank you for your play and cheer for you on your way to graduation.

Get well, DB. We all want to see you back on the field but not at the expense of your long term health. Be strong, my friend!!
