SPRING PREVIEW: Defensive backs

Every position loses players to graduation each season, but a strong argument could be made that no position group suffered anything near the losses the SMU Mustangs did in their secondary, where Bryan McCann, Rock Dennis and Bryce Hudman all are gone. Suddenly, Sterling Moore and Chris Banjo are the old men in a re-vamped secondary, where a lot of young players will try earn a spot in the rotation, starting with the Ponies' spring workouts.

SMU secondary coach Derrick Odum visited with PonyFans.com to discuss the challenges he faces in replacing three senior stalwarts, and who he expects to step into key roles in the Ponies' defensive backfield.

I'd like to see Jeremy Gray get a crack at some playing time. I admit, I don't know much about him, but if he plays anything like his dad did, I want to see him on the field.

That wasn't intentional. Coach Odum spoke very positively about Mojica, and his performance last year in the nickel back role — I just didn't want every one of these things to be as long as War and Peace. Mojica is very much in the rotation this year. Didn't mean to leave him out at all ... I'm sure it happened on some of the other stories, too. My apologies.
