​Last Sept. 12, SMU cornerback Derrius Bell suffered a concussion in a game at Alabama-Birmingham. Sidelined for three weeks, he returned against TCU and, on the game's first play, violently hit a Frog receiver after a reception.

The tackle forced a fumble, and gave Bell another concussion.

The end.

Bell, considered the Mustangs' best defensive back as spring practice opens, didn't play again last season. And now, after seeing a neurologist last week, he likely won't play football again.

We're getting better at taking care of ourselves. Seat belts. Vitamins. No more NFL players running around the field sans helmets.

But are we also getting wussier? There was a time when football players suffered concussions, and merely wobbled off the field while their teammates giggled that they got their bell rung.

Now, that bell tolls.

Troy Aikman retired after numerous concussions. Last year Martellus Bennett missed a couple games after a similar head injury. Tim Tebow's bounced brain was constantly in the news.

It feels like progress, what with the research of the brains of former NFL players Terry Long and Mike Webster and Andre Waters. But by becoming less violent, could football become less entertaining?

Mrs Bell, the guy is beyond a jerk. In my oppinion probably never played football. I know from experience that a concussion is not something to mess around with.

Derrius did the right thing.

Who is this guy, and someone please stop him from breeding if it is not too late.

He has no children that will EVER play college ball, and I will bet you his wife can kick his [deleted].

He is the sports writer for the Dallas Observer, most of the time he does a pretty good job and is amusing, but that was definitely a stupid story. I assume he was trying to be a bit "tongue in cheek" but that is not something you joke about, will fire off an email to him to voice my displeasure.

On a side note though, he has done several full stories about SMU in the past and did a pretty good job at those. He likes to be funny in his columns and this is a poor attempt.

Please produce a Whitt story about SMU that was "a pretty good job." Everything I have ever read about SMU from him has been crap. I hear he never attends anything at SMU, and writes his drivel based on stories he reads elsewhere. This sure looks like one of them.

The article ignores the multiple exams and opinions which led to the decision. There may be some wussification in the world, but not here.

Derrius might actually be playing if he was more of a wus. He's a warrior. I'd love to see him play but I'd rather him have a brain that works well when he's in his 40's. Thanks for raising a good kid

Wuss is not a word I would have ever used ot describe DBell. As mentioned above, I'd agree with Warrior or something along those line.

I have a thought, give me some room. How about we give Darrius one more chance to put on the pads and go one on one hitting drill with Mr. Whitt-less? We could charge admission to watch and donate the money to help research with concussions!!
