Texas Monthly on the Leach Affair

Texas Monthly on line has what seems a good article about the Leach and Adam James business. You may have to register for access. I don't think SMU was mentioned once in the piece, which is as it should be.

That is an outstanding article. I read it through a couple of times over Spring Break. Balanced and puts forth both sides of the story. I remained in the anti-Leach camp after reading it, but it paints the coach's story well.

This article is missing the following paragraph.

Texas Tech opens their 2010 season against SMU at home on September 3. SMU is the only Division 1 school to recieve the NCAA's death penalty.

Lesson: Never hire a coach with a law degree.

Yeah, on second thought you probably are correct. SMU ought to award author Sam Gwynn an honorary degree next honors day, don't you think? Failing that the SID office could establish an annual award bearing his name for pertinent reporting or some such.

I read the article. I don't understand why the word never got out or in the media about what a jerk this guy was until the James situation. The media really let us down again. I can understand players or former players being afraid to comment but for nothing except glowing reviews and calling him "eccentric" really missed the boat. Winning should not cover-up that this guy has no place in amateur sports. I wonder how his wife and daughters feel about him....embarrassed maybe or does money ease the embarrassment.

Leach has shown his true colors and will never coach at a BCS program again.
A mid major might take a chance once the stench wears off but he is done in big time athletics.

When a head coach at a Division 1A program using his "bully-pulpit" to rile up the homer alumni crowd by personally defaming and attacking a student althlete then he has no business being a head coach. Leach chose not to participate in the due process he could have followed to handle this matter through proper university channels. He mostly likely never be given another chance because of that low class, despicable conduct

But does any of this really surprise anyone? We have known that the guy is a first rate p%@*k from the beginning. He reminds me of one of those low rent high school coaches that get their rocks off the power trip of ordering around 17 yr olds. Some 2A school in west texas will take a chance on him.

Cosner in Bull Durham makes a comment to the fledgling pitcher that is destined for the Majors that wearing moldy shower shoes would be considered 'colorful'...but only in the Bigs...any other place it is just considered filthy and gross...thus Leach at Tech...the media failed nobody, but rode the convenient horse as far as it was profitable, and then jumped at the blood in the water. I have less an issue with the press than with Texas Tech University officials and the athletic department, who were aware of this train wreck and still managed to alienate a portion of their fan base, put themselves in a difficult place legally, and carry on with the eager help of the media a war of [deleted] for tat that has made them look anything but in charge.

Under pressure from the ruthless, the clueless combined with the spineless to achieve the worthless.

Leach will eventually rebound, because he wins.
