BRIAN FARKAS: A whole new world

Competition for roster spots on a college football team is stiff — just ask the high school stars who never make a roster. For walk-ons, the challenge is even greater: in order to earn a spot on the team, coaches must be dazzled in limited practice reps, because most of the work and attention goes to the scholarship players.

If those odds were daunting enough, imagine trying to walk on after not even playing the sport for four years.

That's exactly what Brian Farkas is doing. The former SMU soccer player is working out with the SMU football team, hoping to earn a spot as a kicker and/or punter. He has played the sport before, and certainly has a strong leg, but still, he knows he faces an uphill battle to make the team.

Farkas visited with PonyFans.com to discuss his departure from the soccer team, the adjustment to kicking a football and what he envisions for his future on the gridiron.

Cool story. He's got a couple of really good ones ahead of him, but all you need to know about the importance of good kickers can be learned as soon as you don't have one.

Good luck, Brian.

Cool story.

I think it could be good to have quality insurance between Szymanski and Loftus if possible. That way if Szymanski has a minor injury you do not burn Loftus' redshirt for just a game or two. Of course, that assumes that Farkas is good enough that we are not sacrificing too much by using him over Loftus.
