University of Texas running back Vondrell McGee was charged with driving while intoxicated after being arrested Sunday in the 500 block of Martin Luther King Boulevard, according to the arrest report.

McGee, who will be a senior, was charged with a first-offense DWI, a class B misdemeanor punishable by a maximum fine of $2,000 and/or a jail term of up to 180 days.

Longhorns coach Mack Brown said Tuesday that McGee will be suspended for "at least" the season opener at Rice, and will work with the scout team until he is eligible to play.

"We're ... disappointed anytime one of our players is accused of wrongdoing," Brown said in a statement. "We take a strong stance against drinking and driving and will thoroughly investigate this situation to get more details."

The last Longhorns football player arrested for DWI was kick returner D.J. Monroe last November in San Marcos. He was suspended indefinitely from the team but was reinstated for the BCS title game. That move came after the DWI charge was dropped in December in exchange for a guilty plea to a misdemeanor charge of obstruction of a passageway.

According to the arrest report filed by the Department of Public Safety, McGee was pulled over for driving with his headlights turned off. The officer said in the report that he detected the strong odor of alcohol on McGee, and that McGee's eyes were bloodshot.

The report said McGee failed to comply with all of the field-sobriety requirements, and registered Breathalyzer readings of 0.125 and 0.126. The legal limit in Texas is 0.08.

The officer noted in his report that McGee was cooperative.

A Longview native, McGee has appeared in 35 games for the Longhorns. He has started seven games, including four in 2009.

Last season, he battled injuries while rushing for 300 yards on 56 carries and scoring two touchdowns.

Mack's wife, probably hears this well rehearsed statement in her sleep. Pony Up!

How does Texas (and Brown) maintain this relatively clean national image? They probably average 4 or 5 arrests from the football team per year.

Don't get Stallion started, he gets very angry at any mention of UT crimes.

Texas won't have a chance against Rice without him in the season opener. It's refreshing to see a coach take such dramatic action against a player who commits indiscretions..

I've said many times I have no problem reporting about Texas players legal problems-therefore I had no problem with the thread. What I do have a problem with is hypocracy, inaccurate characterzations and the intense enjoyment some losers get from the mistakes of high school and college student athletes because they wear a different color jersey. As for the hypocracy of the evils of college students drinking too much at the University of Texas-see Daily Campus Poll linked below. (Ha I've been waiting for some one to fall into this trap for days)

LOL...very true Nick!

Stallion is a defense attorney when it comes to the Longhorns and pretty much everyone else and a hard-nosed prosecutor when it comes to SMU.

Maybe this is becoming the normal trend, with major college athletes. How sad if it is...

Which of the people who posted above you fell into the "trap" and exactly how does this even qualify as a trap? I did not see anyone say anything about UT students (including student athletes) drinking too much. Yeah, 50 people in the survey answered in a way that implies they smoke pot - in what way does this indicate hypocricy in relation to this thread?

The kid got caught. Now it looks like ole #2 will not be #1 on opening day. Big deal. If he was a bit older and say a doctor or nurse, he would lose his license not his starting position. Maybe it is a good lesson early in life that prevents problems down the road.

What I have a problem with is lawyers who can't spell hypocrisy.

I get tremendous enjoyment out of Burnt Orange charges going to jail.
And the only "inaccurate characterization" is that UT is God's gift to us all.
Screw TEXAS!! :)

I'm just wondering why Texas appears to have a squeaky clean reputation in general as a football program when they seem to be one of the top transgessors in terms of football athletes getting arrested in the country. SMU has its one every-other-year incident. Texas has four, five or six football players arrested each year.

Oh, and by the way, the biggest hypocrisy has to be mack brown's feigned disdain for such behavior when he is so obviously permissive as a coach.

I have no doubt that he would in a second suspend his fourth-string running back for that big game against NTSU because of his deep moral character.
