BRYAN McCANN: Defying the odds

Since he was young, SMU cornerback Bryan McCann has been told he couldn't compete. First he had surgery to repair a hole in his heart. Then he was told he was too small to play on offense in high school. As a senior, he feared a broken leg might have ended his chances to play college ball.

Now he finds himself hoping for a shot at the NFL. A starter since his freshman year, McCann wowed NFL scouts at SMU's Pro Day when he ran the fastest 40-yard dash of any player in the country. Since then, he has been hearing from a lot of NFL teams. Whether he gets drafted, or signs as a free agent, all McCann wants is a chance.

What a terrific story.

Bryan has been so good for so long, I'd completely forgotten about the heart surgery story. His parents were told he wouldn't be able to run? Hope the doctor who said that has found another line of work.

Good luck, Bryan!

I'll predict it: Bryan not only gets a chance, but he sticks on a roster, too. Maybe practice squad, maybe not, but I think he makes it. Sure hope so, anyway.

I can remember seeing Bryan's family shivering in El Paso, or waiting in line at airport security very early in the morning, and on the flight to Honolulu. It's awesome how much they support Bryan. I really hope he does well and can get to the next level. My first vision of McCann as a Mustang was in Lubbock, his first game as a true freshman...the Tech WR caught a TD pass, but McCann was right there on him.

I say McCann is the second Mustang drafted this weekend.
