No spring game - anyone else find this odd?

While the rest of the college football world is turning their spring football games into huge events, SMU isn't even having one this year.

Yeah, yeah. JJ says there isn't enough depth to have a Red-Blue scrimmage. Whatever. You could still stage something for people to rally around.

Coming off our first bowl game in forever and all the good feeling generated by the season, we don't follow up with a spring game? A chance to sign some autographs, sell a few more tickets? Something to remind people SMU has a rising football program? August is a long way away.

Reading between the lines, for whatever reason I don't think JJ likes the idea of spring games. Or even promoting a final spring practice. Just think we're missing an opportunity here.

JJ is not big on spring games and never had one when he was at Hawaii.

Hawaii football was the only show in town. That's far from the situation here.

I know, but that doesn't change the fact that June Jones doesn't like spring games.

Having been to my share of SMU spring games, they never were a big part of the overall program-usually a part of desperate marketing to season ticket prospects and goodwill for mustang club members. Think we will do just fine without the spring game.

Not enough bodies. Injuries have left the offensive line, defensive line and linebackers pretty thin — one more injury to any of those could be a monstrous setback.

I'll trade a spring game for a bowl game any day.

Still, it's missed pub.
Every other big school in Texas got a mention, photos, in DMN for their scrimmages.

Jones is in his own orbit. We're along for the ride. Get used to it.
He'll never have to address his claim during his Liberty Bowl Dis-a-thon that the Hawaii Bowl would draw television viewers second only to the national championship. (It wasn't even close.) 8)

We get a blurb on the last page of the DMN that mentions our spring game. We arent missing out on any "publicity" if thats what you're worried about. And we dont exactly draw the world to our spring games. More people show up at the Mockingbird Luby's senior citizen luann special at 4pm than our Spring Scrimmage.

As a fan, I would love a spring game or maybe one every weekend during spring training. I think it is admirable that the coach doesn't risk any more injury to his players than he must in preparing for next season. With the scholarship limits and then the long seasons with 13 games or more with a bowl.....the game has almost become too dangerous to practice at full contact much less play.

Not strange at all. JJ's never been fan of them.

Even last year it wasn't much of a "game," more like a practice. This year is not really much of a change, it's just been announced in advance. Last year we showed up expecting a game and were surprised that it wasn't. I will miss the barbeque with the players afterwards though.
