says we added a 2010 commit. Did the academic losses make room for us to sign the guy or was that made possible some other way?On Saturday the Mustangs hosted a 2010 defensive tackle on an official visit and ended up getting an commitment!

Did Academic losses make room for JC DT?Rivals tease:

Beat whoever it is we are playing!! @PonyGrad
Re: Did Academic losses make room for JC DT?Probably — we've lost three, right? If we have any vacant scholarships left, I hope there's still another talented CB out there.

Re: Did Academic losses make room for JC DT?Technical question. Since the 2010 National LOI day has come and gone, what does a "commitment" mean at this point? Does it mean that he has signed an LOI? Or is there some other process for JUCOs whereby he has just verbally committed and will sign an LOI later?
Re: Did Academic losses make room for JC DT?I believe that either he or SMU (or both) has to fill out some sort of paperwork before he can officially sign, but I'm not 100% clear on this
Those who complain about a problem are simply wasting time they could use to fix it.
Potential is nothing, performance is everything.
Re: Did Academic losses make room for JC DT?At Arkansas they sign kids to financial aid agreements and follow up with a LOI when the kid gets to school. I believe, although not certain, that the financial aid committtment locks in the kid in a way similar to the LOI. I have no idea about the rules surrounding this type of deal but they have talked about it being done with 2 or 3 kids here.

Re: Did Academic losses make room for JC DT?I think it is called a "Scholarship Award Agreement" and functions essentially like a LOI.
Re: Did Academic losses make room for JC DT?it has little to do with Academic losses (just so we are under 85) - it has to do with that we can take in only 25 per year - so that means that one of our recruits did not make grades and the JC tackle would be replacing him
Re: Did Academic losses make room for JC DT?The Arkansas deal is a financial aid agreement and contrary to what I said earlier, it does not bind the athlete, but does assure the athlete of a paid education, and then the LOI is signed later. It gives no assurance to the school. I heard them explain it again tonight on a local show.

Re: Did Academic losses make room for JC DT?We've signed 28-I believe we were full last year- so I'd anticipate at least 3 on our 2010 commitment list to be academic casualties

or....... a school can play a numbers game by asking fully qualified players to "Grey Shirt" and enroll spring semester. There are many good reasons for a player to Grey Shirt and the team benefits as well. A Grey Shirt player doesn’t count against the 25 limit in the fall and joins in the spring when scholarships may free up for various reasons. This technique also allows an incoming freshman to delay the start of his five year eligibility calendar to play four seasons. The down side is that Grey Shirts unlike Red Shirts can't practice with the team. Here's a great overview of the current Grey Shirt practice: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1174 ... greyshirts
