Cavan's staying. Now what?

OK, Coach Cavan is staying. Now what happens? Will there be any changes on the coaching staff? Who needs to stay and who needs to go?
He now has no excuses for not recruiting well. In the past, he's been able to point at a hole in the ground and an artist's rendering of the stadium -- now he can assure kids he'll be back and show them the real stadium. It's time to put up or shut up.
What concerns me is that his win total has gone down each year, and that reflects the pattern he established at his previous coaching stops. He did better with Coach Rossley's players than he has with the players he recruited. He needs to win next year. I would think he has a year to prove himself.

As much as I hate to say it, I think Kueck needs to stay. I am tired of changing offensive coordinators every year and it taking half the season to get going.
Schumann needs to stay too. I still think he is a quality coordinator. I think the main thing we need now is consistency. We haven't had a year without a great deal of turnover in awhile and in my opinion, it has show in the results.

What now? We go 4-8 or 5-7, AGAIN. That's what happens. 2001 will be the last year for his excuses. Then we can try and get a real coach. And some talent on the field, other than the punter.

I agree that Schumann needs to stay, but I'm not so sure about Kueck. That "creativity" we all raved about against Kansas seems to have disappeared over the last 10 games. Not sure who should replace him, but I'm not sure I'd keep him.

What we do now is simple: RECRUIT, RECRUIT, RECRUIT.
With the season we just had, the coaches had better be living on coffee while driving from one kid's home to the next. They can see their families in February.

Mike Cavan would have easily gotten SMU to a Bowl if he was competing under the same Model that June Jones is today and had the benefit of Ford Stadium. See my trailer as a source.

June was being gracious. Cavan wouldn't have been able to overcome the cultural baggage of losing for so long. Very few other coaches specialize in this.
And don't forget that Cavan had two very strong recruiting classes -- better than any we've seen under JJ yet (including this year). It's not just about recruiting.

I like the one that says anyone who knows anything about June knows/knew he has/had ZERO interest in coming to SMU..or something to that effect

Read the whole quote in context-I believe it is Pony Pride's trailer. Its starts off something like "anyone who knows anything about the type of program Jones runs or the players June Jones recruits...." Hey I admit that was based upon an assumption that SMU wouldn't allow June Jones to recruit bottom of the barrell academically-but what you forget is that was true at the time. The numbers published by the DMN show that they did in fact lower the standards so that June Jones could get 4-5 more times marginal recruits into SMU than even Bennett did. 23 out 25 Category C recruits plus he's had about 12 non-qualifiers in 2 years. I never had a problem with June Jones as a Coach. I had a problem expecting June Jones' results using SMU's Model-plus I've always said that quality coaches won't go where a Competitive Model is not in place. Even though June Jones obviously has been allowed multiple more times academically marginal recruits he still reportedly-based on all the [deleted]' and moanin' from "inside sources" considered not signing his Contract because "he had been lied to." Maybe my comment wasn't so far off after all. I know what I said-and I know I had a solid factual basis -you can interpret it anyway you like.
