Talks about Peruna(refers to him as a midget horse)....discusses culwell...peruna's travels, ect...

Its not pulitzer stuff but a nice piece for those of us that recognize peruna as the only mascot of SMU...

Slight change of subject. I wonder whether this hullabaloo over the new mascots isn't really a ploy by JJ to purposefully awaken a little righteous indignation from the SMU faithful, to get us to remember what we're all about. We've been in slumber mode for more than a quarter decade and maybe it's just what we need. We are a great university who has slumped so far we've forgotten who we are.

Hah. No, it isn't. Nice thought though.

Then what is it? June Jones is not stupid.

The mustangs, which have been trained, will be decked out in SMU colors of red and blue and will kneel at the appropriate time. Geldings are good, Pickens said.

"They keep their minds on what they're there for," she said. "They are not going to be naughty boys." http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/101609dnmetperuna.4006ebe.html

Great new image.

uhh, Ms. Pickens, the 'naughty boy' image is precisely warranted for Peruna...just ask the Tech mascot...I suppose gelding all males of any species will 'keep their minds on what they're there for'...sheesh

Rainbow Warriors to Warriors...
Mustangs to geldings...

tell me again 'what they're there for'?

They're awful, plain and simple.

I think the move to the geldings was exactly the same type of move that JJ made from rainbow warriors to warriors. I also think that JJ knew it may be unpopular, but knew that any extra passion towards the program would be a good thing. It was not a move that JJ made for the purpose of intentionally failing, just a move where there would be benefits with either outcome.

The geldings wouldn't do this:

In 1994, during a football game between the United States Naval Academy and SMU, Peruna killed Bill the Goat. Following the incident, the NCAA passed a ban on having two live mascots at the same sporting event. Now only the home team is permitted to bring their live mascot.

Check the year - SMU and Navy didn't play in 1994.
