ESPN just had some radio wonk on — from a station in Nebraska, it should be noted, so he probably has a Herbie Husker tattooed somewhere — to talk about Nebraska's move to the Big 10/11.

His response suggested that part of the reasoning for the move, of course, was the big money the school will receive from the Big 10/11 network.

No kidding.

But then he talked about how the University of Nebraska is working hard to position itself as a more respected "research university" and that the Big 10/11 is "known as a research conference" (it is?), the real driving force behind the Huskers' dash to the Big 10/11 is "more academic than athletic."

I can't even believe there are people in the state of Nebraska who buy that load of crap.

Close, but Baylor getting hosed and now Missouri suddenly having warts, is pretty darn funny.

Anybody see the PAC commish saying how glad he was to get a great academic school like CU on board? For the general student body, yes. For the members of the football and basketball team? Not so much.

OK, maybe it is known as a "research conference," but there's not a soul on the planet who thinks academics has anything to do with this move. It's about football and money, and not in that order.

Yeah, that's what I agreed with you about.

I imagine that was probably Kevin Kugler.

The line I have heard from them--and I don't know the validity to this--is that joining the Big 10 also gets them into the "Consortium of Institutional Cooperation" or some such nonsense. It is apparently the Big 10 schools plus the University of Chicago and how they distribute research money. The word is that the money from the CIC far exceeds the money from the Big 10 Network, and that was why Harvey Perlman wanted in.

If true, it isn't that ridiculous that it was part of the decision, but it is still about money regardless of where the money comes from.

U of C is still a chrter member of Big 10...they should make their comeback...
