I'm at extended HH, which explains why I'm starting a thread. It's pretty rare (thankfully) but I was intrigued by it that I wanted to share.
http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/n ... sion060610I also apologize if this has been linked before. It's new to me, although I recognize the date of the column.

we can take it - what's the word? Despite what we all want to believe, I think we pretty much all know how this is going to end up.

Everything is pretty fluid. All I'm going to say is that I'm hoping for a miracle. If Orsini is this genius and Copeland was this imbecile, then I'm ready to see proof of Orsini's rainmaking. I wont go into the vast differences of what Orsini gets to play around with as opposed to what this university "allowed" the athletic department to work with in previous years. I think I've posted too frequently on the subject. I actually like Stallions signature concerning that topic.
But I digress...and it's time to watch USA vs. England soon.
Pretty much, the sins of the past have finally come back to haunt us. Maybe, just maybe, this university "might" have been able to swing some type of stick if we had a few more seasons like the past one. Maybe. But unfortunately, the time is now and one season in 20 years is not a trend but an anomaly in the eyes of others. We should be able to continue the success of last year, but we dont have 3 years to prove our case. What we have is one great comeback season with the hopes of more to come. We do not deliver the Dallas TV market and we do not draw good home attendance or travel well. Thats a lot to overcome, folks.
So I guess we will see. Some of my brokers are TCU guys and I just want to smack them for being so smug. But give them credit...they made the decision YEARS ago to do what was neccesary to compete. It just kills me seeing them do well.
But the situation is fluid. Jedi can only predict future events with a 90% accuracy. So there's hope still.

Thanks Board of Trustees, R. Gerald Turner, and Copeland, for putting us in this mess.

There's no question TCU is in a better position. They can stay put in their conference and be in a better position when this is all said and done.
I think it's clear Orsini is trying to improve our situation. I think it is an uphill climb, but not impossible in this goofy landscape. He clearly has much more to offer than Copeland ever did, but we're still hurting from years of neglect. If we don't move to a better conference like the MWC, we can hope somehow the CUSA is improved out of this.
We can look on the bright side here. We didn't start this. We haven't put ourselves in the position of having to forrage for something like Missouri apparently has or A&M might do. We're not the hot potato no one wants like Baylor. We're in a better conference than the Sun Belt, WAC or Mid-American. Frankly, before this is all over, I think one of the other "big boys" may fall - like the Big East.
It is very fluid and a lot can happen. But if nothing happens to us, it's not the worst thing in the world.

Look, we are going to be okay. The worst case scenario is that we stay in pretty much the same league we are in now and everyone thought that was a huge step up for us several years back. How do you thinkk Kansas, K state and Baylor are going to feel when this is all done? Those are teams that are going to be worse off, not SMU.

jtstang is correct as long as all the conferences DON'T go to 16 right now and that's the way its looking. If the MWC, Big 10 and the Big East go big and the ACC is scrambling to back-fill from an SEC raid-then it could be cataclysmic if we don't get into the MWC. That's the High Stakes Poker. MWC16 offers our best hope and our greatest possible agony. Remember though the 16 team Super Conference may be a process that occurs over several years.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I can't think of any CUSA school that is being courted by a major conference. If all of the CUSA members stay the same then our initial task is to dominate the conference. The way we do that is to commit ourselves to being a national power. Undefeated seasons, beating CUSA schools+ schools like TCU and Tech will lead to high national rankings. Then the next time the chairs are moved around the boat we will be able to re-join a major conference or win a playoff whichever comes first. Eddie P is correct that we are probably too late for this round, but that does not mean we can't be ready for the next round.

I believe ECU, Memphis, UCF, SMU and UH are all in play the larger these Super Conferences get. You can't just look at one scenario-its a chain reaction. Big East could really be in trouble. ACC will survive but may have to backfill.

SA, to me that is easier said than done.
We have never beaten Tech in the modern era. IMO, both Tech and especially TCU will get stronger over time. Look at our record against these 2 teams over the past 15 years.
JJ helps, no doubt, but I fear that is not enough. They will simply out recruit us.

I do not think Copeland deserves to be on that list.
Turner has been our President for the past 16 years. On this issue I wish he had acted more Presidential.

No doubt it is easier said than done. We have to do it with lesser rated recruits. But, it is doable. If we offer all of the support that Texas etc. do, then we can win some of the recruit battles with TCU and Tech. We definitely can dominate our conference. The more we do that the easier it will be.

Copeland is the only one that should be on that list. He was not good for us.
